Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida makes surprise visit to Ukraine

By KARL RITTER 39 minutes ago

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida began a surprise visit to Kyiv early Tuesday, hours after Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in neighboring Russia for a three-day visit with Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine casting a shadow over both meetings.

It comes after a week in which China and Japan both enjoyed diplomatic successes, and as both are increasing support for their favored sides in the ongoing war.

Kishida will meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Ukrainian capital.

He will “show respect to the courage and patience of the Ukrainian people who are standing up to defend their homeland under President Zelenskyy’s leadership, and show solidarity and unwavering support for Ukraine as head of Japan and chairman of G-7,” during his visit to Ukraine, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said in announcing his trip to Kyiv.

That is their goal.

But they are totally untested with no field experience of any note.

Yes Japan can give them a run for their money.

So much attention is paid to N.A.T.O. support for Ukraine, but support from a nation like Japan is critical also. Their economic support for Ukraine is essential, and Japan's military support is increasingly becoming important.. It's impossible to visit Ukraine and then not leave with a greater resolve to provide aid to their people.
