North Korea claims 'radioactive tsunami' weapon test at sea

Source: AP

By KIM TONG-HYUNG an hour ago

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea claimed Friday to have tested a nuclear-capable underwater drone designed to generate a gigantic “radioactive tsunami” that would destroy naval strike groups and ports. Analysts were skeptical that the device presents a major new threat, but the test underlines the North’s commitment to raising nuclear threats.

The test this week came as the United States reportedly planned to deploy aircraft carrier strike groups and other advanced assets to waters off the Korean Peninsula. Military tensions are at a high point as the pace of both North Korean weapons tests and U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises has accelerated in the past year in a cycle of tit-for-tat responses.

Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency said the new weapon, which can be deployed from the coast or towed by surface ships, is built to “stealthily infiltrate into operational waters and make a super-scale radioactive tsunami through an underwater explosion” to destroy enemy naval strike groups and ports.

The report came hours before South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol pledged to make North Korea pay for its “reckless provocations” as he attended a remembrance service honoring 55 South Korean troops killed during major clashes with the North near their western sea border in past years.

I don't doubt they are capable of irradiating the ocean (as most nuclear capable nations have disgustingly)

but to create a sizable tsunami that would overwhelm strike groups would require a tremendous yield. The nuke could easily do damage without the tsunami claim as we have seen in past tests from decades ago.

I'm not sure they want to go MAD as they may get a couple hits while their nation ends up a red boiling pustule on the face of the planet. Kim can go hide, he won't have a cinder to come back to.

It's a shame, remove the zealotry and artificiality and North Korea looks like a beautiful place to visit.

Russia claims to have the same type of weapon, probably how nk got ahold of it.

Much of it ended up being complete bullshit for their conventional platforms when the shooting started in Ukraine. The same more than likely applies to their nuclear capabilities.

The amount of yield necessary to create a "radioactive tsunami" capable of severely impacting US strike groups is in the crazy category. It's doubtful NK has enough weapons grade material to do that, much less the technical capabilities to deliver it.

A nuke in deep water in a harbor or close to shore would cause a tsunami, I would imagine. That mushroom cloud has to go up from where it blows so there would be some catastrophic displacement.

I dont mean giving N. Korea the nukes though rather I lean towards Russian or Chinese military personal providing and detonating the nukes.,
Why? I think they want to split the Western nations focus from whatever they might be doing.
In the case of China it would be to take the focus off the artifical island military bases they have been building in an effort to claim more territory.
Where as Russia could be involved so as to take some of the focus off with their current military invasions of the Ukraine and Moldova.

The Bikini tests were in shallow water which would magnify the blast by reflecting it off the sea bed. Very few ships sank directly as a result of the blast and wave. The radiation of the water was more harmful than anything else.

The claims of 100m tsunamis are fantasy.
