House passes GOP education bill that aims to provide additional oversight for parents
Source: CNN
The House voted Friday to pass a controversial bill that aims to increase so-called parental rights in the classroom, as House Republicans spotlight an issue that has emerged as a key party priority.
The Senate is not expected to take up the bill and Democrats have criticized it an attempt to turn the classroom into a political battleground.
Among other things, H.R. 5, also known as the Parents Bill of Rights Act, would amend the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to require schools to provide parents with a list of books and reading materials available in the school library as well as posting curriculum publicly.
It would also require elementary and middle schools that receive federal funding to obtain parental consent before changing a minor childs gender markers, pronouns, or preferred name on any school form; or allowing a child to change the childs sex-based accommodations, including locker rooms or bathrooms.

Damn, I am so very tired of these folks - every day you see more of what the GOP-led states are doing to hurt those who are not white, straight, or christian.

It is not okay to shove them down other peoples throats.
This is that.
"This" is our country's long and sordid "tradition" of enshrining delusional "closely held beliefs" as the law of the land, supplanting reason in the process, destroying our freedoms thus removing our ability to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
There is no freedom without reason.
May reason rule.

(10,670 posts)This is not about 'parents rights'. This is about pushing ignorance as education. I would also point out to these idiots that the entire library listings are usually right there in the library office if they would stop by and take a look. Oh, that's right, all this is too much of a bother... until it becomes entertaining for them. Then, they are all up in arms. This may well and truly be the first generation that does NOT want their kids to be smarter and better than they are. Which is fucking insane.

(80,064 posts)...... In remarks on the Senate floor Thursday, Schumer described the measure as a school control bill.
If passed, schools across the nation would be forced to adhere to a panoply of federal regulations that take power away from parents and school districts. Again, let me repeat that: it would take power away from parents and school districts, away from educators, and put it in the hands of elected politicians. Again, the GOP that treasured small government, local control, is long since gone, replaced once again, by hard right MAGA ideologues, Schumer said.
House Minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, was upbeat leaving the vote because Republicans lost five votes while Democrat lost zero. They dont want to ban books, he said
In a news conference after the vote, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said, In this bill we say, parents have a right to be heard. They should be able to go to school board meetings and not be called terrorists.

Then, tell them to stop with the strong-arming (like showing up to the board meetings armed), the threats of bodily harm, and their refusal to even consider discussion. If they are going to act like terrorists, then why should we not call them terrorists?

(22,874 posts)we got a zero. My oldest brother and aunt died when I was 8, and from then on, my brothers and sisters had little supervision or guidance, so our classwork and character were our responsibility.
As I get older, I realize that few people are without scars from their life experiences. It is ridiculous to assume all of us are capable of overseeing and second-guessing educational professionals. The gilead wannabees will jump on the opportunity to demean educators and classroom work, even as the other parts of their lives burn down around them.
I'm glad to see that the U.S. Senate and the President are stoppers on the cruel and evil intentions of cruel and evil people.

The Retrumplicans see this as a winning issue, because some dumb, off-handed comment by Terry McCaulif allowed the Koch Fascism Network to push that dumbshit Youngkin over the finish line in the VA Governors race.
