Guns are the leading cause of death for US children and teens, since surpassing car accidents in 2020.

Firearms accounted for nearly 19% of childhood deaths (ages 1-18) in 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wonder database. Nearly 3,600 children died in gun-related incidents that year. That’s about five children lost for every 100,000 children in the United States. In no other comparable country are firearms within the top four causes of mortality among children, according to a KFF analysis.

Children are more likely to be killed by a gun than in a car accident

Firearms have been the leading cause of death for US children and teens since 2020, representing 19% of all deaths for children 18 years and younger in 2021.

2. Maybe guns wouldn't look so bad if we got rid of seat belt laws.

I've kind of run out of words on this subject, it's just so fucking STUPID. I've heard right wing gun fanatics who worship guns as though they were part of a religious cult, it's just unbelievable.

Semiautomatics and high capacity magazines have been around for decades.

Unfortunately, many focus on the cosmetic features of a gun and not its actual lethality.

The much ballyhooed .223 Remington round which many AR-15 style rifles are chambered to fire has been on the market since 1964 and isn't any different now then it was back then .

What exactly do your acquaintances refer to when talking about their latest and greatest killing machines?

Basically, any semiautomatic capable of being fitted with a detachable magazine that can hold more then 5 rounds is a very efficient killing machine.

Are Guns the Leading Cause of Death for Children in the US?

Motor vehicle-related crashes used to be the leading cause of death among children and teens.

Key facts:

-The latest available data pertinent to this claim covers 2020 and 2021. As of this writing, there is no data available for 2022 and 2023.

- The claim that guns were the leading cause of death for U.S. children in 2020 and 2021 is true only if the selected age range is 1-19 years old. This range excludes infants under one year old, who have a unique risk of age-specific causes of death.

- Similarly, capping the age range at 17, instead of 18 or 19, also alters the result, as children aged 17 and under have a greater risk of dying of vehicle-related injuries.

13. In other words, accidents are the leading cause of death to actual children.

Calling 18 & 19yo's who are old enough to live on their own, vote, drive, smoke, get married and join the military "children" is nonsense IMO.
