(82 posts)A number of people are believed to have been killed after two US Army helicopters crashed in Kentucky.
The state's Governor, Andy Beshear, said it was "tough news" with "early reports of a helicopter crash and fatalities are expected".
Local news reports say the incident happened at about 21:35 local time (02:35 BST), and as many as nine people may have been killed.
Local military confirmed their helicopters were involved in the crash.
It happened in the Trigg County area, close to the large Fort Campbell military base.

(53,003 posts)Two explanations come to mind.
One is that a reporter looked up the nomenclature for a Black Hawk, saw "HH-60" and just put that in the story.
The other is these aren't birds assigned to Campbell. There are a bunch of Black Hawk variants. The ones stationed at Campbell are the UH-60, which belong to the 101st Aviation Regiment, and the MH-60, which belong to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. HH-60 is what the Air Force calls the ones they have. The Navy calls theirs SH-60s.
By the way, these guys were pretty far off post. The Kentucky county Fort Campbell is in is Christian County.

(23,612 posts)there and always heard the only reason it's called Fort Campbell, Kentucky is the base HQ and the post office are in KY.
If the crash occurred near HWY 68 in Trigg, it was well to the northwest of the base.

(53,003 posts)Go to Google Maps and do Street View on the base. The state line runs through the post office parking lot. The most-southern corner of the Post Office building is, at most, 50 feet north of the state line. Post Headquarters is in Tennessee.
Now for real fun: the Army allows, or at least did when I was there, the local courts to prosecute traffic offenses on base because the Staff Judge Advocate doesnt have the time to deal with speeding tickets. Every base has civilian cops on it to deal with family members, so if the MPs pull you over they call these guys in to write you up. The road to the west of all the barracks areas is now called A Shau Valley Road, and EVERYONE speeds on it. It is possible that if youre speeding in the right place on this street youll get two tickets - one for each state.

(23,612 posts)over in Todd County and there are roads that wind in and out of both states especially out in the farm land
My high school played FT Campbell in basketball (and I presume also football now - we did not have a football team when I was in school)
So it was only the Post Office! I did not know about the civilian cops on base. that is hilarious!! Thanks for the cool info that I would not know otherwise.
