( "catch and kill" is actually not illegal - and especially if there is a non-disclosure agreement involved but what is illegal is misrepresenting the money being used for it as "election-related" on your business records and reimbursing your lawyer for paying it by calling it a "retainer" for legal work)

Since it really is unprecedented, that would be next to impossible. 
as it was happening (although most of the hearings were over the summer but they started before school let out for summer). It is so much easier for schools to cover "current events" now thanks to the internet streaming of the news. I remember the "Weekly Reader" did at least touch on the 1972 election that I recall but don't remember if my classes in later years got those news pamphlets by the time of the Watergate hearings.
He talked a lot about Civil Rights, how George Wallace managed to remain in power and when the name Viola Liuzzo brought up here, thanks to him, I knew exactly who she was. Though I can't say I remember learning about Watergate in school, think I was home for summer vacation, too, though I do remember that last helicopter wave. And I remember the Weekly Reader, too, but by that point I was away at school, I went to boarding school starting junior high school year and that was pretty much a news blackout. We didn't have cell phones in those days, or even access to TV.
it wasn't 24/7 and very little cable (let alone any news channels on cable). I remember my cousins had cable back in the early '70s (they lived in NH with terrible reception for Boston stations so were wired with cable) and that was the first time I saw an all-cartoon channel. But news wise, it was ABC, NBC, CBS, and PBS (plus any local indie stations).
So I had access to TV for my last year in college. Nobody else that I knew did. But you're right, there wasn't "breaking news" in those days. I could catch up on General Hospital and watched The Untouchables in syndication - and the news I watched was from the local Utica, NY station. The local news anchor was a very sharp woman, Donna Hanover (better known now as Rudy Giuliani's ex-wife!). 
I remember I had a 13" portable black and white TV and was happy! 
My fave show '73 - '74 -
Was a Bill Bixby fan and always wanted a white Corvette until I found out how much they were.
My uncle still teases me about that. Nobody else had a TV - and the only one I knew who had anything to do with computers (there was apparently one in the college library) was one of my suitemates who was a math major and she often had "computer duty" on weekends. As for cars, I was away at school (or summer camp) by the time I was old enough to drive. I did take drivers' ed my junior year in HS, but I had no opportunity to practice so I had to take it again in my 20s - and the teacher was my 9th grade Social Studies teacher, so he knew me!
And I already mentioned my favorite show - they showed it in syndication weeknights on the local station - and my only crush was the star. And I once won a local TV news contest since I knew the actor who played Frank Nitti.
I know that was syndicated here maybe caught it a few episodes. Ironically, HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" covered that period of history with the "prohees".
And congrats on that "win" back then. I remember entering contests like that (mainly radio ones where you had to be the "x" numbered caller answering the trivia).
And, if you think about it, it's actually one take on "history," and I always did well with that.
