DeSantis: Florida won't cooperate with Trump extradition
Source: The Hill
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Thursday called the indictment of former President Trump un-American and said the state would not assist in any extradition request.
The weaponization of the legal system to advance a political agenda turns the rule of law on its head. It is un-American, DeSantis, who is seen as Trumps top rival in a potential 2024 GOP primary, tweeted after news of the indictment broke.
The Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney has consistently bent the law to downgrade felonies and to excuse criminal misconduct. Yet, now he is stretching the law to target a political opponent, DeSantis continued, adding that Florida would not assist in an extradition request given the questionable circumstances at issue.
...
Trump, who is a Florida resident, is expected to be arraigned next week.

I wrote a law review article on interstate extradition. Desantis doesn't have a choice. Extradition is required by the constitution. Federal courts can issue a writ of mandamus and force DeSantis up extradite Trump.

(33,424 posts)Its not common but it happens and nothing is done about it. Northern governors often refused to extradite fugitive slaves before the civil war.

(43,312 posts)The states you note refused extradition in advance and by executive order over crimes re bodily autonomy that vary by state.
This FL Man spouted off by Twitter.
Sorry, but common or not (you only name two out of a possible fifty), this example was classless histrionics that didn't reflect respect for rule of constitutional law, just twisting existing gubernatorial power to publicly disdain the rule of law over one campaign finance violator of another state. Pretty different.

The DoJ has personnel to make the arrest if he does not turn himself in, which I think he will. Trump wants no perp walk for the cameras.
DeSantis' statement is meant to shore up his standing with Trump's base, which he will need. DeSantis could be the last man standing and benefit politically, but then again, Trump could run from prison and win as a martyr.
I think that last scenario is unlikely people will give up on a prisoner for president but I've learned to never say never with this guy.

This includes not being able to control his own population should any of them try to interfere with the extradition. I cannot wait to watch him being forced to sic the police on his own people. And, if he does not... well, that makes him an unviable public servant, does it not?
