GOP fundraiser says he got millions to illegally lobby Trump administration

Source: Washington Post

Elliott Broidy, a former top Republican fundraiser who admitted to illegally lobbying the Trump administration on behalf of foreign nationals, described his actions publicly Tuesday for the first time, testifying in court about his failed attempts to quash a federal investigation of a Malaysian financier and to spur U.S. officials to extradite a wealthy Chinese dissident living in New York, whom Beijing had branded a criminal.

Although he could have pocketed up to $75 million if his efforts had succeeded, he told a federal jury, he wound up with far less: an $8 million retainer and a $1 million “appearance fee” for traveling to Thailand for a secret meeting.

Broidy, who pleaded guilty in 2020 to conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act and was later pardoned by President Donald Trump, is cooperating with the Justice Department in criminal cases involving Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho and his associates in the United States. Authorities say Low and others profited from the theft of $4.5 billion from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Broidy, then a Los Angeles-based investor, helped corral big donors to support the Trump campaign. After Trump took office in 2017, Broidy was named deputy finance chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Broidy expressed no clear remorse on the witness stand as he described the illegal lobbying in mostly clinical terms. Under questioning by a prosecutor, he repeatedly used phrases such as “business opportunity” and “the deal terms.” As for helping Low, he referred to leveraging “my relationships in the administration with the president and others who could be relevant.”

There is only getting caught and paying the consequences, and they will chance it every time they can.

Sex scandal[edit]
On April 13, 2018, The Wall Street Journal reported that Broidy had a sexual relationship with Playboy Playmate Shera Bechard, resulting in a pregnancy in late 2017.[57][58] The model later had an abortion. Donald Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen negotiated for Broidy to pay $1.6 million for the woman's silence. The settlement was falsely characterized at the time as a personal injury settlement.[59][60] In response to the Journal article, Broidy issued a statement acknowledging that he had had a "consensual relationship with a Playboy Playmate", that Cohen had contacted him after being approached by the woman's attorney, Keith M. Davidson, and that Broidy had then hired Cohen to work out a non-disclosure agreement.[61] Broidy resigned his post at the RNC the same day the article appeared.[62] A few days later Cohen confirmed in court that Broidy was one of the three clients he had given legal advice to in the previous year.[63] Some columnists have since speculated that Donald Trump was really the person who had the affair with Bechard, with Broidy agreeing to provide cover for Trump.[64][65][66] Broidy's lawyer, Chris Clark, stated that Broidy will withhold forthcoming payments to Bechard due to an alleged breach of the non-disclosure agreement on her part.[67] On July 6, 2018, Bechard filed a lawsuit against Broidy and the attorney Michael Avenatti, in relation to the cessation of the settlement payments.[68][69][70] Bechard has alleged in a complaint that Broidy was physically, sexually, and emotionally abusive of her, and that he exposed her to herpes.[71][72] Broidy has denied the allegations.[72] On September 7, 2018, California Superior Court Judge Elizabeth White granted Broidy's request to strike allegations from the case going forward that were not relevant to the breach-of-contract dispute.[73]

In April 2017, Broidy was named one of three national deputy finance chairmen of the RNC. The other two? Michael Cohen and Louis DeJoy (Yeah; that Louis DeJoy.)

- Nine months later Broidy was named in Ukraine criminal probe over sanctioned Russian bank, VTB.

- That same month Broidy payed $1.6 million in hush-money to a former Playboy model whom he had gotten pregnant.

- And who arranged for that $1.6 million hush-money payment? Michael Cohen.

- In Sept 2018, the Playboy model had to get a lawyer after Broidy became violent and demanded she get a "Family Values" abortion. (I'm guessing at Planned Parenthood's deluxe "Abortionplex." (Look it up.)

There is no one more a hypocrite than a "Law n' Order!," pro-life, Gawd-fearin', "Christian" conservative Republican!
