House Democrats call for Feinstein to resign
Source: The Hill
Two House Democrats called on Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to resign on Wednesday, a stunning move underscoring the rising concern over her prolonged absence from the Senate.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) was the first Democrat to publicly call for the 89-year-old Senate stalwart to step down.
Its time for @SenFeinstein to resign. We need to put the country ahead of personal loyalty. While she has had a lifetime of public service, it is obvious she can no longer fulfill her duties. Not speaking out undermines our credibility as elected representatives of the people, Khanna wrote on Twitter.
Shortly after Khanna said Feinstein should step aside, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) followed suit.

(22,590 posts)Her absence is keeping Biden judicial nominees from getting confirmed! That's incredibly important. Look how much damage Trump's judicial appointments are causing at all levels of the federal judiciary.
I hope Biden gets another term. I think there's a good chance he will. But life has no guarantees, and we can't afford to waste a single second of THIS term.

It didnt take much either. In every critical swstate Hillary lost by less than 1%, while Jill Stein received 1% in those critical swing states
and it didnt go unnoticed that Nina Turner, Cornell West, Sirota, Gray, etc were part of the opposition campaign in the primary, who not only refused to vote for Hillary in the general election, but encouraged others to do likewise by either voting third party or not voting

He was the exact opposite of Coke Can Thomas or Scalito.
But after a stroke left him hemiplegic, he decided he had become an obstacle to the very deliberations he held so dear.
He dragged his feet a bit - but before long, he decided to hang his hat.
And he was replaced by a man who proved to be every bit as great: John Paul Stevens.
The nation benefited enormously from his selflessness, and his knowing when to fold'em.
That's the spirit I hope Sen. Feinstein will make her decision in.

(8,178 posts)we need an appointed Senator now, who can easily win 2024 and overcome the Gingrich/Rpve machine that is working their poison brew in California/national Politics. I feel strongly Schiff is the one who can prevail over other contenders.
We need to KEEP both California U.S. Senate seats dark Blue.

She endorsed a nice, but unknown guy to fill her seat. She only won by 2 points in 2022, despite all her money and popularity. Her guy will get creamed. I'm in her district. It's got some of the reddest pockets of Orange County. I'm very bummed.

Upthevibe
(10,180 posts)I love Schiff and he's my choice for the next Senate election cycle. Having said that, don't you think it would be inappropriate for him to get the appointment now because Katie Porter and Barbara Lee are also going to run?
If Schiff gets appointed, he'd have an advantage running as an incumbent. I'm thinking our Governor should appoint someone just for now (maybe from the California Legislature) until the 2024 election cycle...
I'm interested if you feel the same way?
RandySF
(84,276 posts)Anyone appointed will want to hang on to it, especially if you give up your legislative seat to "keep it warm" for a year and a half.
Upthevibe
(10,180 posts)Well, that's why I think it would need to be someone who's not interested (if there is such a person).
Don't you think it would cause a real problem with the Katie Porter and Barbara Lee supporters?

(84,276 posts)Hes in the house and is running for senate. I do think it would give him an advantage. The thing is, she says she will be back (at least for now she is saying that). They just need to find someone to temporarily be on the judiciary committee. I think it would have to be someone already in the senate to replace her temporarily. If she has to be replaced (temporarily) I think she should lose her seat on the judiciary committee.

(10,180 posts)I posted some of what I'm going to say yesterday about this situation.
As a Californian, I feel, without question, Dianne Feinstein MUST retire now. There are demonstrated cognitive issues and other situations (see article below).
How can ANYONE support her staying in the Senate given that she's so compromised physically?! She will be 90 y.o. in June!! And now, she's responsible for the delay of judicial appointments!
My opinion is that (if she retires now) Governor Newsome would need to appoint a kind of place-holder until the 2024 election cycle. Possibly someone from the California legislature. If Governor Newsome were to appoint Adam Schiff (who I love and is my personal choice for our next Senator) it could put the other two candidates who plan on running (Katie Porter and Barbara Lee) at an unfair advantage because Schiff would be an incumbent.

I have all the respect in the world for Ms. Feinstein and her years of public service, but it is time for her to go, for all the reasons you already listed. Recognizing this has nothing to do with being "mean" to her. It's about facing reality. I would be sorry if her feelings are hurt by this call to step down, but some things are more important than any one individual's personal feelings.
Sorry if this sounds harsh to anyone here, but sometimes facts are harsh, and we have to face them anyway.

Not being up on the facts, or at least some key facts, is definitely the core of the problem.

(6,017 posts)She has done so much for the party and for the people she represented. There's not much question that she was a powerhouse, and she used it to do good.
But as with far too many of the current batch of Democrats nearing their personal retirement age, she didn't grow a replacement. Someone to learn their networks, be trusted by them, and conserve the power that had accumulated. So when they're gone, whoever replaces them will have to start from scratch. That sets the party and those they represent at a disadvantage compared to the GOP. I worry that the same motivation is also what is keeping her from stepping down in the first place. It's been a good run, but in the end if like the GOP, our party is also populated with people who love power too much - even if it is for a good cause - it's too tied to each individual. And in so many areas of life, economics, ecology and so on right now, we *need* to be thinking of sustainability.

(4,741 posts)When DiFi ran in 1992.
Thanks to Nancy Pelosi in the early 80s, the California D party had started getting its act together. By the end of the decade, the party had done tremendous work in recruiting so many great Democrats for elected offices in a state that, at the time, was quite purple. And the party had especially invested a great deal of work in recruiting women for office, and made a hard commitment to get them elected.
We had Pelosi who won her own run for Congress in 1986, then the double whammy year of 1992 when Barbara Boxer and DiFi both ran for the Senate. Boxer's seat was a typical open seat after the retirement of Alan Cranston. The other seat? That evil scumbag Pete Wilson had stepped down to run for (and win--GRRRRR) governor, and appointed another idiot republican for the office (Seymour? I think that was his name). When the special election finally came, DiFi threw her hat in the ring.
All of the pundits said that Boxer--sure, she had a chance, but DiFi, too? Nope. She was too inexperienced, her resume was too thin, yadda yadda yadda. But the most maddening negative prediction was that there was no way any state would have two women as Senators.
Excuse me?
We worked our butts off to get both of our women Senatorial candidates elected, long hours of phonebanking, door-knocking, the looking anywhere and every for every donation we could, all the voter lists we pored through, the precinct maps dug into, and so on
It was all worth it when the results finally rolled in, and both women had won. The victory parties--OMG--Cannot describe the joy at Boxer, Feinstein and CA Democratic Party HQs when the results were announced at long last.
It was a monumental accomplishment, in every way.
I will always cherish that memory, and be grateful that DiFi stepped up for an office many doubted she could win--or hold onto. But she did hold onto it and became quite powerful as a Senator.
That's why it's so hard for me to say this now, but I have to:
Dianne... You've served long and well. You've given above and beyond, for so long. No one is in doubt of the great work you have done. No one will ever fault you for saying, I've given until i can't anymore.
It's time to let it go. For yourself. For your constituents. For your country.

But our government needs able bodied humans that are below the retirement age! How many 80 year olds do we have in the Senate? Too bloody many.
Im for forced retirement and she should not have run again when she was 84! The leadership needed to fill that seat with someone much younger.
Dont call me ageist because Im 64!
