Several news organizations go silent on Twitter after Elon Musk adds 'government-funded media' label
Source: Business Insider
Elon Musk's decision to label some news organizations as "government-funded media" on Twitter has led to various outlets quitting the platform.
Twitter on Sunday added the label to some media accounts, including NPR and the BBC.
Following an interview with a BBC reporter on Tuesday, Musk changed the label on the BBC's Twitter account to "publicly funded media" instead of "government-funded."

NPR's "government-funded" label remains. The company announced it had stopped tweeting from its 52 Twitter feeds. CEO John Lansing said Twitter's actions were "exceptionally harmful and set a dangerous precedent."

(9,056 posts)so stupid that he doesn't realize the huge legal liability he is creating for himself. First of all does Twitter have a written policy including criteria for what determines being "government funded"? I'll bet not. It's all off the top of this idiot's head. Because his 'labeling" can have negative financial impacts to organizations that he labels the lawsuit for damages due to arbitrary actions is sure to follow. Because their is no written criteria applied a plaintiff could point out that any news organization who received Covid payments under the Paycheck Protection Program is therefore "government funded". The term media would also apply to bloggers like the esteemed scientist, medical expert and fount of all knowledge Joe Rogan.
When you are a corporation you damned well better have written policies and criteria for definitions/labeling of other parties. You don't get to throw a negative label or description to a party you don't like while at the same time not doing so for others with similar/greater circumstances. You can claim the defense of incompetent management to try and deflect some liability but you cannot escape the responsibility for what clearly appears to be actual malice and arbitrary conduct.
