U.S. ambassador visits Evan Gershkovich in Russian prison
Source: NBC News
U.S. Ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy made her first visit to Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich on Monday, more than two weeks after Russia detained the journalist for alleged espionage.
He is in good health and remains strong," Tracy wrote in a tweet from the Embassy account. "We reiterate our call for his immediate release."
Russia had so far denied the embassy's requests for access to Gershkovich, who is being held at Moscow's Lefortovo Prison. Gershkovich was detained in late March on suspicion of espionage in the interests of the American government, Russias Federal Security Service (FSB) said in a statement, which was reported by Russian state media. Russian authorities have not provided evidence to support the charges.
The Wall Street Journal and the Biden administration have repeatedly denied that Gershkovich was affiliated with the U.S. government.

(8,103 posts)but, Biden did tell every American in Russia to leave. Russia is using arrest to gain advantage. Even Russians want to leave. We're going to run out of prisoners to trade.

(169,756 posts)and I expect there are a number of other reporters there too in the M$M "Russia Bureaus". His parents were from the USSR as well although they live in the U.S.
IIRC when I did the OP when he was first arrested, I saw a side story that mentioned that they had an office and other staff there as well (the article had been updated multiple times since)...

(8,103 posts)They are all at risk. It will not be worth it for him. He could have been just an eenie meenie miney mo pick for the charge. Optically speaking, picking one among many is better than throwing the whole office in the clink.
I guess if you're a reporter and you produce negative copy, you, too, can have a charge made up against you. We don't know enough, though, so we'll see. The world sucks right now.
