4 killed in Maine home, 3 wounded in linked highway shooting

Source: AP via AOL

Four people were fatally shot at a house in Maine on Tuesday shortly before gunfire wounded three others on a busy highway, in a pair of crimes that are linked, authorities said. Hours later, a man was charged with murder.

Police closed a portion of the interstate highway and residents and businesses in the area were ordered to shelter in place for about 90 minutes before authorities determined there was no threat to the general public.

The shootings are among a spate of recent mass killings that have shaken communities both large and small, including a Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee; a bank in Louisville, Kentucky and a Sweet 16 party in a small city in Alabama.

In Maine, police charged Joseph Eaton, 34, of Bowdoin, with four counts of murder Tuesday evening but declined to discuss a possible motive for the shootings or identify the shooting victims. Eaton was expected to appear in court later this week.

Murders are rare and random shootings even more so. Obviously we are not immune to the disease that has taken over the country.

Because they do absolutely nothing to stop the carnage. In fact in TN, they act to literally protect the rights of gun manufacturers. Nothing more barbaric than that.

When something happens every day, we get immunized to it. And we know nothing will change. Tomorrow there will be another mass shooting. And the day after that and the day after that.............

Used to be, shootings were splashed over news 24/7 and it was like grief porn. Now the major national "news" outlets hardly mention the latest shooting. After years of mass carnage, the shock has worn off.

And if nothing but loosening gun restrictions was done after 20 7-year olds were brutally gunned down in Sandy Hook - amid all the outrage that caused - the public understands that there's nothing WE can do about this.

How many phone calls, letters, marches, protests, have all been done to raise awareness and to try to change minds? And instead of helping, republicans are passing laws to make it easier for anyone to get a killing machine and carry it around in public with impunity. When was the last time you heard of someone being arrested for "brandishing" a gun? It doesn't happen anymore because it's essentially legal.

I hate what this country has become. I have done my share and written letters, made phone calls, etc. and it just seems so futile.

At this point I really don't know because the repigs just double down after the events (easier access, etc.) and law enforcement, politicians and church leaders pray (harder, I guess).

The fact that so many of our fellow Americans stalk victims of mass shootings and harass kids who survived just tells me we're too far gone for things to get better. We're in a death spiral.

The only hope we have, I figure, is by electing people who vow to change it. But half the country seems to think this is just fine.

But even if we did elect a bunch of Dems who pass gun restriction laws, every single law will end up in front of this corrupt SCOTUS because the gun fetishists will fight even the most benign restrictions. And without court reform as well, nothing will change.

I'm pretty pessimistic this morning.

A "well regulated militia" doesn't kill masses of schoolchildren.

... the GQP will simply say they are staged. Besides, if it was my loved one, I sure wouldn't want their mutilated body being seen by everyone.

Shock factor will only make their side entrench further and accuse us of making things up. They already call every shooting victims' families "crisis actors" as it is.

The only way to change this is by voting in people who WILL change it. And that's damned hard to do with gerrymandering.

In Michigan we got rid of gerrymandering and last week this happened: Michigan Senate passes gun bills to address mass shootings Governor Whitmer WILL sign it into law when it lands on her desk.

If it hasn't already.

Can't happen here, you say? Yes, it can, and it will.

The unnamed, unfunded, unsupported, untrained militia of the facist right is hiding in plain sight. If everyone has guns, anyone armed can step right up when the fascists say when and where. Why is optional. In the meantime, since anyone can get a gun, anyone will, and anyone will gun down anyone else. Again, why is optional. i don't think the survivors of gun murder victims give a damn about why.

Man allegedly guns down parents and their 2 friends days after his release from prison (ABC News)

A 34-year-old man allegedly shot and killed his parents and their two friends at a home in Bowdoin, Maine, days after his release from prison, authorities said.

Around 9:21 a.m. Tuesday, four people were found shot dead at the home: 72-year-old Robert Eger, 62-year-old Patricia Eger and 62-year-old Cynthia Eaton were found inside, while 66-year-old David Eaton was found in the barn, Maine State Police said at a news conference Wednesday.

The Eatons' son, Joseph Eaton, had been released from the Windham Correctional Facility in Maine on April 14 after serving a sentence for aggravated assault, according to police. His mother picked him up from prison and brought him to Bowdoin to stay with the Egers, who were family friends, police said.
