'Slap in the face': Ohio GOP passes bill to keep reproductive rights out of state constitution

Source: Alternet

Ohio State House GOP members voted Wednesday to advance legislation that will keep "reproductive rights from being enshrined in the state constitution."

Heartland News tweeted, "OH committee erupts as the GOP chair prevents 100+ people from testifying against making citizen ballot measures more difficult. The bill would help prevent reproductive rights from being enshrined in the state constitution. OH State Rep. Russo (D) 'This is a slap in the face.'"

Last month, News5 Cleveland reported:

House Joint Resolution 1 is the revived resolution to make it harder to amend the Ohio constitution. Previously called H.J.R. 6 in previous General Assembly (the 134th, for those keeping count), it would require those petitions to receive a 60% supermajority vote to pass, instead of the simple 50% +1. This means that about 40% of the state would get to choose the law.

My wife and I have started talking about moving as well.

Ohio is striving to be as stupid as Florida.

If they can control enough state legislatures they'll call for a constitutional convention & we'll be a theocracy. Sounds far fetched but who knows?

That said, I live in a blue state & I would never move to a red state.

r super majority is a dictatorship, in my state of oh, tx, fl, whereever they got a foothold, then a stranglehold on local or state government.

They might think they have the upper hand, not by me.

I am so proud of your state. We may need to take you up on that. People don’t realize that Ohio is on par with FL and probably has more militia than they do. I feel like we could be the test state for exterminating the Dems. What they did today is appalling! I got the call from the League of Women voters to call my representatives today and hurry. The people who were at the Capitol to speak were not permitted to. My phone call meant nothing.

They saw what the citizen-initiated action did in Michigan and said: "Not here!"

This is blatantly undemocratic. And like the Senate's 60-vote rule, enforces minority rule.

And it's not just Republican Ohio; it's also Republican Georgia, Republican Texas, Republican Florida, Republican Idaho, Republican Iowa, Republican (fill-in-the-blank.)

And it's not just reproductive rights, it's also voter registrations, voter signatures, voter ID's, water for people waiting in line to vote, voter age limits, ballot drop-boxes, mail-in ballots, state control of local election boards, voter forensics, gerrymandering - all with the intent of preventing legitimate voters from voting.

And all this because Trump lost! And Michigan's citizen-initiated reproductive rights proposition that won BIGLY!!!
