Russia bombed its own city, Defense Ministry says

A Russian warplane accidentally dropped a bomb on a Russian city near the Ukrainian border late Thursday, injuring three people and creating a massive crater in a street — the latest mishap in Moscow’s brutal war against its neighbor.

The Russian Defense Ministry acknowledged it was friendly fire, saying overnight that an Su-34 supersonic fighter jet had accidentally discharged a munition.

“As a Sukhoi Su-34 air force plane was flying over the city of Belgorod, there was an accidental discharge of aviation ammunition,” the ministry said, according to the Tass state news agency.

Videos from the scene showed piles of twisted metal and chunks of concrete scattered on the street, several damaged cars and apartment buildings with blown-out windows and destroyed walls.

Seems like something they could have tried to blame the Ukrainians/the US/NATO/Navalny/Bob Barker/Whoever for, but didn't.

Baby steps.

I also wonder about the number of dead and/'or injured. One car was tossed onto the roof of a market and the whole area is surrounded by apartment buildings.

The word in the bowels of the net is that it was a 500 pound dumb bomb, not a glider or anything else, the kind used for knocking out bridges and other large, hard to kill targets. This wasn't a rogue pilot, after the bomb dropped he returned to his base deeper inside Russia.

Ukraine officials have said there are a lot of surprises they're about to spring on the Russians. I have to wonder if jamming an aircraft's navigation systems at that distance is possible. If it is, we haven't done it yet. Or maybe these accidents happen frequently in rural areas and this is the first time one has been announced because it happened to a fair sized city.
