Pence testifies before federal grand jury investigating Trump's role in Jan. 6

Source: NBC News

WASHINGTON — Former Vice President Mike Pence appeared Thursday before the federal grand jury convened as part of the special counsel investigation into former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss and remain in power, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The testimony marks a significant development in the special counsel’s probe, as Pence could provide critical insights on Trump’s thinking in the days leading up to the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. The former vice president published a memoir and Wall Street Journal opinion article detailing several of his interactions with Trump, but some details were left vague. Special counsel Jack Smith’s team is particularly interested in Trump’s efforts to try to block the certification of the election, NBC News previously reported.

Pence's appearance came amid an increased security presence at the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. NBC News spotted multiple black SUVs with tinted windows entering the parking garage in the morning. Two black SUVs entered the courthouse garage at around 9 a.m., an entrance that would allow grand jury witnesses to head up to the grand jury rooms on the third floor without being seen in the public areas of the courthouse.

The SUVs left the courthouse at about 4:30 p.m. When reporters asked Chief Judge James Boasberg, who oversees grand jury proceedings, what was happening, he demurred. A spokesman for special counsel Jack Smith declined to comment.

Pence will be grilled by Chief Inspector Smith armed with the skills of a seasoned criminal litigator…not to mention reams of other evidence at the ready to send any Lie packing.

Beside, who says Pence wants to lie under oath and penalty of perjury…to save tRump?

We already know Pence won’t save Trump, already proves that once
didn’t he?

That’s why he’s testifying today, he did not even his appeal loss of his half hearted attempt to have his testimony blocked, if memory serves…that’s not a an uncooperative witness.

Still can't believe these motherfuckers are walking around after being part of the attempted overthrow of our government. They all should have been executed for treason. Every last one of them. No mercy for any of them. They are still trying to destroy the country.

but he seems pretty far down the ladder of people responsible for J6. He even did his duty to finalize the election over the shouts from donny.

If he was all in with the insurrection, he would granted Trump's wishes and tried to block the certification. But he did the opposite: he defied Trump and earned his permanent animosity kind that if Trump's cultists) for doing so.

I can't stand Pence, but he was not one of those who plotted with Trump to overthrow the government. He's a weasel, and there are plenty of other reasons to loathe him, but he's not an insurrectionist.

He could probably do more of "I don't recall".

IMHO he never really seemed to be in 45's circle like Meadows or Miller so I doubt there was that much of communication in general, between the two of them over the 4 years. He was just a christofascist GOP VP placeholder and RW mouthpiece with a voting bloc, but not an underworld "street fighter" like some of the rest of the slimy ilk that 45 rotated through the West Wing.

Once the appeals court blocked Trump's bid to prevent Pence from testifying, Pence was in the courthouse in no time! Jack Smith must have had everything lined up and ready to go.

Smith has only been on the job for about 5 months iirc. Dude knows how to get things done.

... they're almost ready for indictments.

I'm sure Pence lied about remembering anything and/or took the 5th. He's perfectly comfortable with lies. That much has been obvious for a long time.

and had been putting ducks in a row for him to testify for some time.

Had to dig but I think I got (most of) the timeline...

  • September 9 - 12, 2022 - Upwards of 40 subpoenas issued by DOJ for multiple 45 staffers including Stephen Miller, Brian Jack, Dan Scavion, Bernie Kerik, et al. (BEFORE Jack Smith was brought in)

  • January 26 - Cuccinelli testifies.

  • February 9 - Pence subpoenaed by DOJ/Smith.

  • February 14 - Pence announces he will fight the subpoena.

Pence starts making a lot of fuss about "resisting" due to "Executive Privilege" AND "speech and debate" as a member of the Senate in a role as "President of the Senate". Pundits were laughing about him "trying to have it both ways".

  • February 15 - Mark Meadows is subpoenaed.

  • February 23 - DOJ/Smith files suit to compel Pence's testimony.

And apparently after that was filed, the negotiations were ongoing and Pence started to equivocate about possibly not being "protected" from all of the subpoenas.

  • March 24 - The court rejects "Executive Privilege" claims for at least 7 staffers who were subponeaed including Meadows.

  • March 28 - DOJ eventually gets a ruling where the court ordered Pence to testify.

  • April 5 - Pence announced that he would NOT appeal. So I think after that April 5 announcement, they started the final scheduling.

  • April 10 - 45 ignores Pence and appeals that ruling.

  • April 11 - Miller testifies.

  • April 26 - 45's last minute challenge (I am guessing the lawyers knew it was going to be scheduled this week) was batted down.

  • April 27 - With the favorable ruling from the Appeals court, it was go time.
