SANDPOINT, Idaho At a brewery in this northern Idaho city, hundreds of people recently held a wake of sorts to mourn the closure of Sandpoints only labor and delivery ward, collateral damage from the states Republican-led effort to criminalize nearly all abortions.
Jen Quintano, the events organizer and a Sandpoint resident who runs a tree service, called to the crowd, packed shoulder to shoulder as children ran underfoot, Raise your hand if you were born at Bonner General! Raise your hand if you gave birth at Bonner General! Nearly everyone raised their hand.
Later this month, the hospital, founded in 1949 near the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, will stop providing services for expectant mothers, forcing patients across northern Idaho to travel at least an additional hour for care. In June, a second Idaho hospital, Valor Health, in the rural city of Emmett, will also halt labor and delivery services.
Those decisions came within months of Idahos abortion ban, one of the nations strictest, going into effect in August 2022. Physicians can now perform the medical procedure only to stop the death of a pregnant woman or in the case of rape or incest reported to the police.

(9,287 posts)A patchwork of state laws in the aftermath of a Supreme Court decision overturning the right to an abortion, combined with pandemic-related burnout and low reimbursement rates, could exacerbate an already looming national shortage of obstetrician-gynecologists, experts say.
Medical students say that given the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision overturning Roe v. Wade, they must consider a landscape of rapidly changing abortion legislation, with litigation often making it difficult to determine what is legal where.
Typically "physicians do not go to medical school and go into the practice of medicine because we enjoy interfacing with the legal profession," said Katie McHugh, an Indiana-based obstetrician-gynecologist and board member with Physicians for Reproductive Health.
The OB-GYN shortage comes at a critical moment: In 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention documented gains in cesarean delivery, preterm birth rates and low birth weights, all of which can increase other health risks and require specialized care.

(23,314 posts)Her son and daughter in law have just finished their medical residencies at the University of Washington. Her son in emergency medicine and her DIL is an OB/GYN. Both doctors were offered positions at Bonner General. They declined due to Idahos abortion bans. Neither of them believed they could offer women care if abortion is off the table.
OB/GYNs will leave these states in droves. Its obviously already happening. These fascist nutters who have passed these laws forget that women past child bearing years will also die as a result of not having doctors who specialize in womens health care due to cancers and other diseases that will go undiagnosed. Actually those cancers affect women throughout their lives
not just post menopausal women. But hey, were just women. We are expendable
our only value is in giving birth
and not even then.
Do I need this?
