Former President Donald Trump lashed out at E. Jean Carroll and the judge presiding over her rape claim against him while addressing media assembled at his golf course in Ireland.
A vexed Trump told assembled reporters on Thursday that he had to leave Ireland and Scotland early to return to New York to "confront" Carroll, who he called a "disgrace," and Judge Kaplan, who he called "extremely hostile":

Update 5:11 pm, May 4
From Inner City Press twitter feed from the courtroom:
"
Tacopina: We rest out rest.
Judge Kaplan: So Mr. Trump waives his right to testify?
Tacopina: He does.
Judge Kaplan: How recently have you spoken with him?
Tacopina: A few minutes before I came into court this morning.
Judge Kaplan: I am committed to allowing parties to make their case. I will allow Mr. Trump up to 10 pm Sunday to make a motion to testify - I'm not saying I'll grant it, but I'll consider it and we'll see what happens. 10 pm Sunday, that's it. Tell Mr. Trump

(26,016 posts)Biden received popular coverage of his trip to Ireland, where he was well received by the country of his ancestors.
So Trump decided to "match" that with his own trip to Scotland, the country of his mother, then head over to Ireland, all in an attempt to overshadow Biden's trip. Also, maybe in the hope of impressing the UK royals and getting an invitation to the coronation.
At the very least, it gave Trump a chance to claim that 1) he, too, has roots to the UK and 2) to criticize Biden as disrespectful for not going to the coronation. (I suspect that Trump does not know that only Northern Ireland is part of the UK.)
I think that golf was only the public excuse given for being in Scotland and Ireland.

(1,096 posts)finally made it plain to him that he wasn't going to be allowed to crash the coronation. It's about the only reason for him to be in the vicinity; the weather in the spring is better than winter, but still not great, especially if your 'hair' is allergic to rain and wind. He hates the food. And they definitely have extradition agreements with the US.
I was looking forward to seeing him evicted from the cathedral, though. A frog march by the Coldstream Guards would have been particularly colorful.

wnylib
(26,016 posts)he will show up after the verdict is given in order to trash Carroll and the judge in the press.
He will not testify or request to.
His trip to Scotland was supposed to be a triumphant visit to his ancestral homeland, like Biden's visit to Ireland. Then return to the States on the wave of an exuberant reception in Scotland and Ireland (which never happened) and trash his opponents here (Carroll and the judge).
There might even have been a time when his trip to Scotland and Ireland would have received a lot of positive, popular news coverage. But it fell flat this time.

(130,538 posts)but chose not to. That would have meant he would be under oath and subject to cross-examination, and of course that was a non-starter for him. So "confronting" is likely to mean more fake-Twitter rants, since he hasn't got the cojones to face Carroll (or Judge Kaplan) in court. That should be interesting...
He said, "Its a disgrace that its allowed to happen against a rich guy or in my case, against a famous, rich and political person thats leading the polls by 40 points." Only obscure, poor, non-political people are allowed to be sued and face justice for being sexual predators, right?

Ocelot II
(130,538 posts)the CNN interviewer might get a panicky phone call from Joe Tapioca, begging them to cut off any discussion of the trial. The judge made it pretty clear that he wouldn't tolerate any public statements about it. TFG could be cited for contempt, or even charged with jury tampering. TFG might be trying to provoke a mistrial, but I don't think you can get away with intentionally causing your own mistrial.
2naSalit
(102,798 posts)Is just a pipe dream.
I am pretty sure he will try to throw a nuclear bomb at the trial and try to muck everything up such that everyone is left in disarray, that's what he would want and try to accomplish. I wish CNN was more of a friend of the country than it is. Their facilitation of a pending fiasco is entirely on them for providing the venue.
He wants to blow it up, screw everybody.

wnylib
(26,016 posts)by the time that the CNN program airs, then isn't Trump safe on saying what he wants? Don't the restrictions only apply to public comments during the trial?
This makes me suspicious of CNN's timing for its "town hall" with Trump. They are giving him a platform for defending himself, which he refused to do in court.
Ocelot II
(130,538 posts)The CNN broadcast is on the 10th. The jury could still be deliberating at that time, and AFAIK they aren't sequestered. He can say whatever he wants after the jury has returned its verdict, but the trial is still in progress until then.
wnylib
(26,016 posts)what can the judge do if Trump speaks publicly while the jury is deliberating? The judge could sequester the jury while it deliberates if he anticipates this kind of b.s. from Trump, couldn't he?
If the jury is not sequestered during deliberations and Trump's defensive attacks get publicly aired, might they affect the jury's verdict? Especially if there is a veiled threat to them in Trump's verbal attacks?
I would hope that the judge would charge Trump with contempt and arrest him, but I don't think it would happen. Would there be a mistrial if Trump's verbal attacks intimidated the jury?
I strongly suspect that Trump intends to either influence the jury decision in his favor with his public comments (which might include intimidation) or to create a mistrial by intentionally violating the restrictions on him about discussing it.
I think it could all be avoided by sequestering the jury during deliberations and maybe before that.
Ocelot II
(130,538 posts)watching/listening/reading about news regarding the trial anyhow, but I'm sure he will remind them again and caution them not to consider anything they might have heard about or from any of the parties. He isn't likely to sequester them but with TFG involved you never know.

(4,728 posts)The judge has been leaning on Joe Taco to make a decision about whether he was going to testify. He wanted the decision last week. Yesterday the news said that T's side would not be making a defense - no Trump, and the expert witness on the T side said he was too sick to testify (yeah, sick of Trump).
So what's with this confrontation? Does he think he can just barge into the courtroom unscheduled to show his brawn? Or will he tell a rally of his cultists to "fight like hell" and attack the courtroom?
I like the other posters' argument that he feels dissed in Ireland and Scotland (and England), so he's coming home in a tantrum.
