LONDON (AP) King Charles III was crowned Saturday at Westminster Abbey, in a ceremony built on ancient traditions at a time when the British monarchy faces an uncertain future.
Trumpets sounded inside the medieval abbey and the congregation shouted God save King Charles as the ceremony began in front of more than 2,000 guests, including world leaders, aristocrats and celebrities. Outside, thousands of troops, tens of thousands of spectators and a smattering of protesters converged along a route that the king traveled from Buckingham Palace in a gilt-trimmed, horse-drawn carriage.
It was the final mile of a seven-decade journey for Charles from heir to monarch.
To the royal family and government, the occasion code-named Operation Golden Orb is a display of heritage, tradition and spectacle unmatched around the world.

The TV keeps showing the crowd
I see William and Kate and their children of course, Prince Edward and Sophie, Princess Anne, Harry a few rows back, Camillas children Tom and Laura. No Prince Andrew, was he disinvited?

(13,538 posts)I've seen in a few sources that royal tourism brings in about 2 billion a year to England. The "royal sovereign fund" isnt near that amount. 1000s of Americans just spent a ton to go see the coronation.

When I was in London in 1970, I saw that coronation chair (it was plopped in Westminster Abbey in an aisle). It is literally covered with graffiti carved into the wood over the centuries by who knows how many people. I had thought that it would get covered with some cushioning and fabric but nope... just the sides and arm rests were covered for this ceremony, and the rest was left bare so you can see the "I was here" stuff.

Which one's yours?

(171,705 posts)I don't know how they have it displayed nowadays although from what I understand, they still leave it out for tourists to look at... But at least back in 1970, you could actually touch the thing and even the tour guide was cracking up at some of the stuff that was carved on it.

And it's on both sides, front and back.

(10,478 posts)If we're going to respect other cultures, lets respect other cultures. I, for one, find it fascinating. I find it interesting that the originators of all this ceremony, the ones whose successors currently live in Rome, get much less criticism for their over-the-topness in the service of some figment that lives in the sky than the Brits for their glitzy ceremonies. Tradition.

(7,165 posts)Be that as it may, I'm glad that American took the exit ramp in 1776, from the absurdity of thinking that one's birth and lineage is a qualification for political leadership, from a state controlled church. Institutional monarchy, in defending itself, was deadly to millions of people who gave their lives, not for their own freedom, but to keep their royal family rich and in power.
No thank you.

(7,362 posts)Not to be rude to others who find it fascinating, interesting, etc. It wasn't my cup of tea.
It's their tradition so I don't have much standing to offer an opinion. Even though I do descend from aristocracy, its from a different empire. This national tradition is not hurting anyone anymore than the US tradition of the inauguration. So good luck to them.

(7,010 posts)But if the British people want to have a king, let them have one. I just don't get why so many Americans seem dazzled by the royal family.
