Oakland Athletics' announcer suspended indefinitely after using racial slur

Source: www.cnn.com

Oakland Athletics announcer Glen Kuiper has been suspended indefinitely after using a racial slur during the team’s pre-game show prior to the A’s road game against Kansas City Royals on Friday, an NBC Sports California spokesperson told CNN.

He will remain off air until a review of the incident is completed, the spokesperson added.

Kuiper was discussing the “phenomenal” time he had visiting the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri with A’s TV analyst Dallas Braden when he used a racial slur to describe the museum during the NBC Sports California broadcast.

Hours later, prior to the start of the sixth inning, Kuiper apologized, saying: “A little earlier in the show, I said something, didn’t come out quite the way I wanted it to. I just wanted to apologize if it sounded different than I meant it to be said. … I just wanted to apologize for that.”

Obviously he would never say that word on purpose on live TV given his position, having said that I dont see how most of us could make that mistake. That word does not come out of my mouth by mistake or on purpose, ever.

Even if he is a racist (I can't know either way) he never knowingly says that word because he knows he is bye bye if he does, not on TV anyway.

no attempt to say "negro". That MFer is too old to not know about the "Negro Leages", especially since he's been a baseball professional for years.

Fire his ass.

Negro League.
Dropping the N-bomb may not have been intentional, but by saying it means that subconsciously he has racist tendencies.

Oh, and there is no way he MEANT to say that word on live TV...clearly we all understand that, whether he says it privately or not and he likely does, then sure he needs to be fired.

Even if he uses the word OFF of the tv and broadcasting, NOBODY says that ON PURPOSE on tv in that situation. I am not saying he doesnt say it in private or in normal conversations.

purposely uses the N word ON TV...agreed?

Unless he wanted to end his career, agreed?'

Does he say it all the time otherwise, maybe...could be, yes he should be fired, but NOBODY does it on purpose on TV unless they want to end their career.

He was probably using the word while at the museum earlier that day and it slipped.

in their usual converstational tone, it just came out. Not intentionally, it just came out because that's what he's used to. Too comfortable in and out of his moutn, as another poster put it.

He'd probably been saying that all day while touring the museum, and it came out so casually later on the air.

He didn't mispronounce anything

To me that means he's clearly used to using it which is not good. Maybe he's a racist, maybe he's not, maybe he's the nicest guy in the world. Which brings us to the crux of the problem, it's a word that shouldn't be used but it is a word. Do you condemn him for the rest of his life because of the casual use of a word? Now if he has done other things that show he's a racist then fine fire him and make sure he never gets another job in broadcasting.

These are the kinds of things that drive me crazy because my first reaction is that he's a racist idiot but jumping to conclusions is bad too.

Good news in all of this is, it’s finally completely unacceptable to use racial slurs in our society, and people get called out on it immediately. Yes, we know in private, some people will say awful hurtful things, but at least we don’t have to listen to them shooting their big mouth’s off in public.
