Democrats are projected to flip control of the mayors office in Jacksonville, Fla., the largest city in the country with a GOP leader, according to CNN and NBC.
AP projected that Democrat Donna Deegan defeated Republican Daniel Davis to succeed Mayor Lenny Curry (R), who is term-limited. Deegan, who will be the citys first female mayor, won against Davis in a runoff on Tuesday after the two candidates advanced from a blanket primary earlier this year.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) endorsed Davis back in March.
Deegan worked in broadcast journalism as an anchor at First Coast News and created a foundation, called the DONNA Foundation, in 2003 to support medical providers and patients and survivors of breast cancer after her own battles with the disease, according to her campaigns website. ...............................

(114 posts)I celebrate the election of Deegan. Her breast cancer advocacy and fundraising for her foundation is known by practically everybody in Jacksonville. She overcame Davis' omnipresent scary ads that featured distorted images of her, highlighting her participation in a BLM rally, and the fact that her foundation received COVID funds. She is generally very popular in Jax for good reason.
However, the Florida Democratic party has been incredibly inept for the past 25 years, and while I'm hopeful that Nicki Fried can lead it into an era of effectiveness, and perhaps a few much needed wins over awful GOP candidates, the jury is still out.
Deegan won due to her name recognition and general popularity in Jax. Perhaps the FlaDems can learn something from her, but I'm not ready to give them credit for this.

(2,331 posts)Then there has to be great incompetence.
I live in PA but from what I've read from Florida, his anti-woke agenda isn't the most popular thing going in Florida right now. Particularly since he ignores problems such as the rising cost of homeowners insurance and natural disasters to focus on it.

(4,994 posts)is that metro areas (Tampa, Jax, Miami and Orlando) show blue but the rest of this place is so red it damn near fluoresces.
We need a strong message that resonates better with people in those red cities/towns/counties.
