Key Trump attorney departs legal team
Source: CNN Politics
Washington CNN Timothy Parlatore, an attorney for Donald Trump who played a key role in the Mar-a-Lago documents investigation and once testified before the grand jury, is leaving the former presidents legal team, two sources familiar with the exit tell CNN.
Parlatores departure became official Tuesday, though it had been rumored for several weeks among the former presidents inner circle. The high-profile departure comes as special counsel Jack Smith appears to be in the final stretch of investigations into the possible mishandling of classified documents and efforts to obstruct the 2020 election.
Its been an incredible honor to serve and work through interesting legal issues. My departure was a personal choice and does not reflect upon the case, as I believe strongly the (Justice Department) team is engaging in misconduct to pursue an investigation of conduct that is not criminal, Parlatore said in a statement to CNN.
Parlatore spoke with Trump regarding his exit as well. Parlatores exit is notable given he was the attorney who organized searches for additional classified documents last year at Trump Tower, Trumps properties in Bedminster, Mar-a-Lago, an office in Palm Beach and a Florida storage unit.

"We know there have been so many dominos fall, it doesn't register as a huge deal when lawyers become witnesses against Donald Trump, but it is interesting to watch the movements," Wallace continued. "This today is someone who became a witness and is now quitting. What could be the reasons or explanations for that, Barb?"
"Well, there could be a number of reasons," said McQuade. "It could simply be, you know, people get worn down working for Donald Trump. That would certainly be understandable. But at least one reason might be that a conflict of interest has arisen."
"Someone can't represent a person if they are also a witness against that person," said McQuade. "So it could be quite possibly that he has been cooperating or testifying even if uncooperatively with the Justice Department in response to a subpoena about the movement of those documents. He himself ordered a search for those documents, so he certainly has information that the Justice Department would be interested in. So that would be one important reason that he might be stepping away from his representation of Donald Trump, because he is a witness against him."

The departure has set off speculation that the attorney, Timothy Parlatore, may choose to cooperate with investigators. Parlatore organized the searches for classified documents at Trumps properties. He has already testified before a grand jury.
Parlatore attempted to downplay the departure, spoke to Trump about it, and called his time working for the crooked ex-president an incredible honor during which he helped work through interesting legal issues.
He insisted that jumping ship was a personal choice and tepidly accused the Justice Department of misconduct.
Retweet to urge Parlatore to cooperate with Special Counsel Jack Smith!

(145,553 posts)Remember the idiotic letter that TFG's attorney sent to the House Intelligence Committee. In that letter, TFG's attorneys claimed that all of the classified documents ended up at Mar-a-Lago by accident due to a hurried job of packing. TFG just contradicted that letter at the CNN townhall when TFG admitted that he took the documents and had the right to take these documents.
One of the authors of that letter is Parlatore which explains why he resigned. Here is a description of some of the stupid claims made in that letter. This is a very stupid move by TFG. Congress has no power to block the DOJ/Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation. This filing contains admissions that Jack Smith will be able to use against TFG. I hope that this is a stunt that TFG demanded because

Lawyers for former President Donald J. Trump asked lawmakers on Wednesday to place the intelligence community in charge of assessing Mr. Trumps handling of the classified documents found in his possession after leaving office, saying Congress should strip the Justice Department of authority to run the investigation.
If this sounds outlandish, thats because it is. In a 10-page letter to the House Intelligence Committee, Trumps lawyers in all seriousness argued that they believe a legislative solution by Congress is required to prevent federal prosecutors from pursuing the case further.
The letter proposed that the Justice Department should be ordered to stand down......
University of Michigan law professor Barbara McQuade, a former U.S. Attorney and an MSNBC legal analyst, added this morning, Surely, they know this request is a non-starter that would violate separation of powers. This looks more like a PR move on the eve of indictment.
In this letter, TFG's attorney admits that TFG has classified documents "that the White House staff simply swept all documents from the Presidents desk and other areas into boxes."

This is absolutely wild.
In a letter to the GOP chair of the House Intelligence Committee, two of Donald Trumps defense lawyers argue that the fact Trump may have these classified briefings indicates that the White House staff simply swept all documents from the Presidents desk and other areas into boxes.
In defending Trump they may have just made it even worse for him.
Trumps attorneys wrote the letter to urge Congress to tell the Justice Department to stand down.
TFG gutted the authors of this letter which is why this attorney resigned

(129,440 posts)all of this magnifies the reason why only electing someone to the Presidency who has had experience in some type of government workplace (as an employee including military service) and/or elective office (whether municipal, county, state, or federal), is paramount, even with it not being a Constitutional requirement.
There are certain "rules" (whether they are followed or not) and expectations that are unique for government employees that a Presidential candidate would have been exposed to, and having that exposure would go a long way towards preventing what was a breathtakingly aberrant ethics disaster that marked the previous administration.
The fact that the VP for that administration (regardless of his often controversial policy focus) was such an employee (in Congress and then as governor), illustrates how his knowledge of government seemed to guide his decisions and posture during the insurrection.

45 was one who would have never been the type to work in public/civil service and only used the position as a means for high-level grifting (which is why he's the first in this country's history to not only be impeached twice, but is facing many criminal charges).
