Moscow bans '500 Americans' from Russia including CNN journalists
Source: CNN
CNN Former United States President Barack Obama, late night television host Stephen Colbert, and CNNs Erin Burnett are some of the 500 Americans Russia has banned from entering the country. Russia on Friday announced it was banning 500 Americans, many prominent figures of US executive power, from entering the country in a response to the regularly anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the Joe Biden administration, according to a statement from Russias Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The list includes Obama, former US Ambassador Jon Huntsman, several US senators and the next expected chairman of the joint chiefs Charles Q. Brown Jr. The rambling list of names also includes American late night TV hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Colbert, and Seth Meyers. The statement also said: The attached list-500 also includes those in government and law enforcement agencies who are directly involved in the persecution of dissidents in the wake of the so-called Storming the Capitol.
On January 6, 2021, scores of supporters of former US President Donald Trump sought to stop Bidens certification as president and attacked the US Capitol. Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to question the arrest of the rioters a few months later, saying the people had come to Congress with political demands, Reuters reported.
Fridays list also includes CNN Anchor Erin Burnett and is an update of a previously published longer list of sanctioned individuals that includes CNNs Chief International Security Correspondent Nick Paton Walsh, CNN contributors Bianna Golodryga and Timothy Naftali. While the list was labelled, 500 Americans, Paton Walsh is a British citizen. The ministry justified the bans in a statement on its website that read: It is high time for Washington to learn that not a single hostile attack against Russia will go without a strong reaction.

This solidifies the GOP-Russia connection!

(169,755 posts)I was hoping someone had it and it was a matter of getting it translated. Someone seems to be doing that because different news sources have sprinkled different additional names in their reports.
Their link goes to a Russian site and at least the groupings are alphabetical. I spotted "Sarah Huckabee Sanders", which was interesting!

(169,755 posts)and they wrote that these latest "500" had brought the total up to something like 1842 (or thereabouts) of Americans who were "banned". I haven't seen that list either, but given one of the people on their current list was not an American citizen but was a British citizen, then who knows how many are "valid" American ban-ees on any of their lists...

Maybe I'll make the next list if I just try a little harder.
Edited to add: the person I know is apparently tagged because of his ties to RAND.

(60,968 posts)(nor is John Kerry, who is essentially a diplomat for Climate issues). I could have missed them because the names were alphabetized in Russian. If true, I would guess that they could have intentionally avoided banning them.
BumRushDaShow
(169,755 posts)they indicated this would bring the total to something like 1800+ who were "banned". So I expect some may have been banned earlier (and wouldn't be on this later list). However Russia is obviously not ready to completely break diplomatic ties, so that would mean leaving the top tier diplomats alone for now.
DFW
(60,186 posts)I skimmed it briefly. The article is propagandistic Soviet era style propaganda trash. But when you get to the list, the original English names are in parentheses. Keep in mind that the list is in alphabetical order, but in Russian. Russian has a phonetic alphabet. Therefore, the K sound is only designated with a K. Our c is their s. Therefore, Colbert and Kimmel are close together, both being spelled with a K in Russian.

And you know that I've been to Russia - with my grandmother and her peace group. I can't help wondering what the status of that group is now - and the relationship they currently have with their "sister town."
BumRushDaShow
(169,755 posts)might have been willing to "wait it out" but things have gotten worse and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight. So the relationships damage might take a long time to reconcile.

(255,525 posts)And it was quite a trip, they were so welcoming. The mayor was there, we brought gifts for him and his wife. We visited the school, met with the principal and visited and sang with an English class. I still get choked up remembering when the school doors burst open and the children came running out carrying bouquets of flowers to present to each of us. And one older lady invited the group into her nearby home - and she became my grandmother's pen pal (though she required a translator). And I later learned that this elderly lady was the town's official "head of the Communist Party..."
BumRushDaShow
(169,755 posts)Even if you live in a city, you can often be isolated from others visiting from other countries, so having those interactions is paramount. And having a pen pal used to be a big thing. It's definitely a blast from the past.
Nowadays people can just videochat with just about anyone around the world (assuming their country allows it).

This was the "sister town" of Black Mountain, NC, where my grandmother joined a retirement community. And this was such a great group, experienced world travelers and activists, I got to know and love them all. I have wondered so often what they would think of what's happening now. It's heartbreaking.

The Russian government included three people in their sanctions list with no relationship to Russia. The only commonality with each other comes from their being considered enemies of Donald Trump.
Putins list includes New York State Attorney General Letitia James, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, and Lt. Michael Byrd, the Capitol Police officer who shot the pro-Trump rioter Ashli Babbitt on Jan. 6, 2021.
Donald Trump could not have been clearer over the years that he considers all three as enemies, and Trump continues to revile the three for their opposition to his policies and criminal behavior.
