US 'Won't Tolerate' China's Micron Chips Ban, Raimondo Says

Source: Bloomberg

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said the US “won’t tolerate” the recent decision by Chinese authorities to ban chips by Micron Technology Inc. in some critical sectors, using her sharpest language yet to describe Washington’s reaction. “We see it as, plain and simple, economic coercion,” she said, using a phrase both sides have lobbed at each other amid recent tensions. “We won’t tolerate it, nor do we think it will be successful.”

The latest technology tensions between the two global powers kicked off last Sunday, when the Cyberspace Administration of China warned operators of key infrastructure against buying Idaho-based Micron’s chips, saying it found “relatively serious” risks after concluding a review it announced in March. That followed a sweeping ban by the US in October on exports to China of high-end chips and the technology to make them.

Raimondo’s comments Saturday come after the two sides had a chance this week to air their grievances in person and pledged to keep communications open going forward. Raimondo met with her counterpart, Wang Wentao, in Washington on Thursday, followed by a similar meeting Friday with United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai.

Those meetings are part of a broader intention by the President Joe Biden’s administration to restore high-level discussions with Beijing, including potential visits to China by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and further direct talks between Biden and President Xi Jinping.

You know, to cut them off from advanced western made chips?

Given our goals, you'd think we'd be pleased as punch to see them deciding to eschew some of those chips.

Hardly "advanced western made chips". This is a, "tit for tat", political move on the part of China and needs to be called out

We didn't want them using western chips, and now we're complaining because they no longer want to use western chips.

All while claiming they want the best for the world.

China to foreigners in China: You are a guest here and you must respect everything we are or else you should go home.
China to their citizens in other countries: They must be good hosts and respect everything you are because you're Chinese.

It's fun knowing the language and listening to them tear apart other countries and their citizens IN other countries. When I took my with to NY and went to Woodbury Commons, I was listening to two Chinese ladies talk about how they hated being in NYC, how Americans are all fat and ugly, and how China will one day own the US because the US is weak. I unloaded on them in Chinese and they ran out of the Guess store crying, screaming how I was a terrible person and I should never go to China because no one would want me there.
