McCarthy suggests new commission could look at Social Security and Medicare cuts

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced Wednesday he was launching a commission tasked with looking at budget cuts and he suggested Social Security and Medicare could come under his scalpel.
His pledge came just months after vowing such cuts to mandatory spending programs were off the table.
In February, President Joe Biden spoke before a joint session of Congress, telling Americans the GOP wanted to cut the programs they had paid into their whole lives. "Instead of making the wealthy pay their fair share, some Republicans want Medicare and Social Security to sunset every five years," he said.
"That means those programs will go away if Congress doesnt vote to keep them. Other Republicans say if we dont cut Social Security and Medicare, theyll let America default on its debt for the first time in our history."
.................
McCarthy told Fox host Harris Faulkner that only 11 percent of the budget could be negotiated during the debt ceiling talks because Biden had "walled off" parts of it including the part that included discretionary spending programs.
Now, he said, "We have to look at the entire budget."

(53,206 posts)was THAT important to him. Obviously nothing good will ever come of it and I expect that down the road he will rue the day he sold his soul for the position. However, he just might show up in the history books - his grandchildren will be so proud.

(12,597 posts)Maybe Joe Biden is not a genius. Maybe. But from the beginning of the debt ceiling negotiations, Social Security and Medicare were off the table. Now that the deal is done, a punch drunk GOP is staggering towards utter stupidity. Well played, Mr. President, Sir. Well played.
Mr.Bill
(24,906 posts)but he did it in such a way that it leaves the republicans fractured if not at each other's throats.
Brilliant.
I think by November 2024 McCarthy may have trouble holding on to his seat. Not the Speaker's seat, his Congressional seat. If a Democrat can't win in that district, I could see him being primaried.

(1,391 posts)Whenever the Republicans start threatening SS and Medicare, they start sharing memes about the Democratic party (or various members of the party) threatening SS and/or Medicare and how the Republicans are setting up a commission to stop the Democratic raid of the programs. It doesn't matter if you directly quote who and what and where the threat actually is coming from. Facts make them mad.

(1,391 posts)Do you think they believe some political mileage with the younger voters could be made through manipulations of SS and Medicare that they sell as sharing the burden of funding the programs better by cutting the old and preserving the young from higher contributions. The problem, I think, is that my impression of the young today is that they are quite informed and very smart. I am not sure they can be fooled when the share of burden is still forgiven the rich.
Also George Bush did not succeed with his bull either.

The SS and Medicare Trustees signed a report saying that it will not be able to pay full benefits after trust fund depletion....
https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142927989
The Trustees are 4 top Biden administration officials including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
The then current SS and Medicare Trustees have been signing reports saying the same thing every year for decades. Congress must act to prevent those cuts from occurring on trust fund depletion. That is the harsh reality of the situation.

Remember what the Russians did. They set up tons of fake "news organizations" websites before 2016. I made the mistake and posted one item here it was almost immediately taken down. The thing is that I had already done a Google search and all of those websites were repeating the same thing - lies about Hillary and the Dems. I fell into the trap.
I am not saying that all websites spread lies but at that time they had taken over Google as far as I could see. Although it does seem like Google has done their work since then because I think all those sites are down.
