TALLAHASSEE Protests are planned across six Florida cities and some businesses across the state are shutting their doors Thursday in opposition to a tough, new immigration law pushed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is campaigning this week in Iowa and New Hampshire.
DeSantis last week formally announced his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. But just a couple of weeks earlier, he signed into law the sweeping crackdown on undocumented immigrants that is the subject of the protests.
Im trying to support all of the immigrant people, said Victor Prado, general manager of El Mariachi restaurant in West Palm Beach, which plans to be closed Thursday. They come to this country to get a better life. We left everyone in our country to come to this beautiful country to live better. ..

....................The Florida protests are part of a nationwide effort led by Latino organizations opposing anti-immigration laws in several states and urging more comprehensive immigration reform by Congress. Demonstrations are planned in Jacksonville, Vero Beach, Orlando, Tampa and the farming communities of Immokalee and Pierson.........................

(26,918 posts)All kinds of businesses are supporting their employees and closing down for the day. Restaurants, mom and pops and places I was surprised but Im in solidarity with them. They interviewed a few people and most werent upset but sympathetic and I live in a red county. This was organized and the whole state is participating. They are doing this to bring awareness that the governors bills are responsible for mass defections and fear of retributions to those that stay. ✊

(5,161 posts)with DeSantis is that people actually do listen to him and cheer him on.
His supporters use twisted logic and make wild, unsupportable and in some cases outright fallacious statements to justify DeSantis' actions.

(13,480 posts)I applaud the business executives whose companies are closing for the day to protest. Now if Disney would only announce that theyre looking for alternative states for relocating Disney World (even if they never plan to do it), we could kiss Floridas support for DeSatan goodbye! It helps that theyve announced a hold on any expansion in the state, but DeSantis needs to be brought down.
