(13,460 posts)The Department of Justice said in their filing that when former Trump Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen claimed to have signed a memo in May 2018 directing immigration agents to refer migrant parents for prosecution, and thereby separating families, her intention was not to use separations of parents and children to inflict harm, but instead it was in furtherance of policy objectives relating to immigration enforcement. That made the department immune to legal challenges under the law, according to the filing.
What is wrong with these people? The whole purpose of the program was to inflict so much harm that families would stop coming here. Many of these children have never been found, and no one knows what has happened to them because Trumps government was so callous that they did not bother keeping records of where they sent each child and who took custody of that child. I suspect they wanted no one to know who took custody.
This defense of a heinous Trump policy makes my head spin.
