WASHINGTON (AP) Fending off a U.S. default, the Senate gave final approval late Thursday to a debt ceiling and budget cuts package, grinding into the night to wrap up work on the bipartisan deal and send it to President Joe Bidens desk to become law before the fast-approaching deadline.
The compromise package negotiated between Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy leaves neither Republicans nor Democrats fully pleased with the outcome. But the result, after weeks of hard-fought budget negotiations, shelves the volatile debt ceiling issue that risked upending the U.S. and global economy until 2025 after the next presidential election.
Approval in the Senate on a bipartisan vote, 63-36, reflected the overwhelming House tally the day before, relying on centrists in both parties to pull the Biden-McCarthy package to passage.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the bills passage means America can breathe a sigh of relief.

(128,441 posts)and was cracking up at Schumer, who like a coach during a ball game, was barking out the time (IIRC, it seemed that each side was given 40 seconds each to give a for or against remark and then a 10 minute block was allotted to complete each roll call vote). And the Clerk was trying to enforce that as much as possible.
Schumer: 40 seconds!!!!!

Over the weekend, Velshi said there are only two countries with debt limits: US and Denmark.
But in Denmark, it has never been an issue
I think I read that Denmark's limit/floor/ceiling is very high limit too, basically insuring that it never becomes a problem.

(26,721 posts)Passing a single amendment would have sent it back to the House for additional action and almost certainly extended the process past the default line.

(128,441 posts)They WERE submitted, there WERE statements made by BOTH sides for and against, and roll call votes WERE taken for each one - which TOOK TIME.
You can try to ignore or dismiss the fact that they actually have "procedures" to follow that are designed to slow things down (that is why they dub themselves "the deliberative body" ), regardless of the outcome, but that just shows your weak argument and continued insistence on manufacturing what you thought MY point was.
