New Hampshire Man Is Arrested After Threatening to Kill U.S. Senator
Source: New York Times
A man from New Hampshire faces up to 10 years in prison after threatening to kill a United States senator because he was angry that the senator was blocking military promotions, according to federal court documents.
The U.S. attorneys office for the District of New Hampshire announced on Friday that Brian Landry, 66, of Franklin, N.H., had been charged with threatening to assault, kidnap or murder a United States official.
Mr. Landry called a senators district field office on May 17 and left a threatening voice mail message, according to court documents. The senator who was threatened by Mr. Landry was not named in court documents, which only detailed that the senator has been in office since January 2021.
Hey stupid, Im a veteran sniper, Mr. Landy said in the voice mail. Unless you change your ways, I got my scope pointed in your direction and Im coming to get you. Youre a dead man walking, he said, adding some expletives.

I think based on the info in the article the unnamed senator must have been Tuberville, I'm not surprised his idiot position is getting him heat from vets.

Maybe not death threats but harsh shame, humiliation, degradation, opposition and denouncing and dirty laundry airing as loud as possible, everywhere in public.

(11,404 posts)Just because somebody is in your/our camp - on this or that, or even a majority of issues, (or likewise, because they are a military veteran) - does not make terrorist threats okay. Full stop.
We need to get as many of these whack jobs off the street as possible. And as quickly as possible. Now more so than ever.

(2,699 posts)Supporting the evident intentions of this "sniper" is wrong and can only be viewed as immoral and execrable -- but supporting (even monetarily) his defense to ensure he gets a fair trial is not.

(11,404 posts)But you and I both know that 99% of these 'go fund me' deals - are all about "Oh, the terrible injustice!" "Wrongly treated by the system!"
I have nothing against this man getting adequate (even superior) representation. (if in fact that was what the poster was really calling for). And then they can throw the belligerent ass*ole in jail for a nice length stay!

To be honest with you; Im not entirely sure how this comment is permitted to be voiced here on this platform.

(90,960 posts)Ethics arent a private matter they are how you live and speak your whole life in public as well as in private, taking personal responsibility for your decisions and statements without reference to gods or demons.
Speech, like every other right in the Constitution, has its limitations. You may criticize but not overthrow the government. You may give speeches, but no matter how fiery, not incite riots. And people who disagree with you may do so as vehemently as yourself.
And when you join an organization well, every on-line discussion board has TOS (Terms of Service) that you sign before joining. You dont have to read it first but you do have to sign.
Go back and refer to DUs TOS. DU encourages activism to get Democrats elected or re-elected. Support for third party candidates is verboten on that basis, and if you feel silenced because of that, there are other sites. DU no matter the level of venting believes in protecting the vote and not in violence. Those who approve of political assassination can freely find another board to approve it on.

(6,617 posts)had this been a Democratic Senator, would the punishment been as bad? Probably would have been 2 years off in 6 mos with good behavior. Are no other senators getting death threats and what punishiments have been doled out?

(11,404 posts)What I do see - is a creditable threat made by a person with full knowledge, and ability, to carry it out. The fact that this man is a military vet, a former sniper (if he's to be believed), and made specific 'detailed' threat ... To me that is where the weight of this judgement turns.

(2,699 posts)I think we can afford to let justice take its course without rushing to it.
If the man actually left a voice-mail threat on this Senator's life, he's pretty much given the State an easy conviction, but I think it's best to give the state and its courts a chance to make a determination of guilt
Ever since seeing the Ox-Bow Incident as a child, I've been mindful that assumptions of guilt, no matter how clear the "evidence" might seem, can be flat wrong.

(8,868 posts)Was a Dem, MTG would have called the vet a Patriot. There are so many vets that are teetering on a razors edge of mental stability, people likes Tubs and trump (never served pricks) are treading on dangerous grounds fucking with them. I cant for the life of me as a vet understand that anyone that ever served or is serving could vote red. Unless they fell off the wrong side of that razors edge.
Where is Lindsays outrage at Tubs bullshit. He went ballistic that the Debt ceiling did no raise military budget enough before the agreement, and got more money. Its the men and women that protect us, not just more cash. Their moral and earned advancements are critical for a strong force. What say you, Lindsay, any outrage at the Tubs from Bama?
Fuck that racist fecal prick Tubs. He got famous on the backs of Black Athletes he thought he owned.

I have no clue how that can be done, without giving up all privacy to innocent social media users. Scammers and death threateners need to get what they deserve. Equally evil assholes.

as sort of a fuck you to this guy.
I mean, its not like Alabama has any military bases at all if you dont count Fort Novosel (formerly Fort Rucker, which is the Armys flight school), Maxwell AFB, Anniston Army Depot and three or four National Guard bases. And its not like Alabama has any military retirees except for the metric shitload of them that they have. And of course no one in Alabama supports the military except for the 62 percent of Alabamians who will fuck your shit up for saying anything bad about the service.
Yeah

(3,121 posts)If a Democrat was filmed screaming that I imagine he/she'd be behind bars already. What about the multiple routine death threats for Nancy Pelosi, AOC, etc. Do they count?
Personally I think threats are stupid and probably cowardly. Either do the deed or don't and STFU

(33,643 posts)In no way necessitates that this man agrees with liberal values in general. There's plenty of far-right people who dislike establishment GOP almost as much as they do Democrats. Kinda like there's Jimmy Dore fans who can't stand Hillary even though they're all generally far-left types, and many are big fans of Bernie.
It's a mistake to assume this guy is in any way 'one of us' just because his target was Tuberville.
