he PGA Tour has agreed to merge with Saudi-backed rival LIV Golf in a deal that would see the competitors squash pending litigation and move forward as a larger golf enterprise. The two entities signed an agreement that would combine the PGA Tours and LIV Golfs commercial businesses and rights into a new, yet-to-be-named for-profit company. The agreement includes DP World Tour, also known as the PGA European Tour.
LIV Golf is backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, an entity controlled by the Saudi crown prince and has been embroiled in antitrust lawsuits with the PGA Tour in the last year. The deal announced Tuesday would end all pending litigation. PIF is prepared to invest billions of new capital into the new entity, CNBCs David Faber reported Tuesday. Terms of the deal werent disclosed.
The agreement the second stunning sports deal in just months, following World Wrestling Entertainments merger with Endeavor Groups UFC will require the approval of the PGA Tour policy board, Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a memo to players that was obtained by CNBC. There is much work to do to get us from a framework agreement to a definitive agreement, but one thing is obvious: through this transformational agreement and with PIFs collaborative investment, the immeasurable strength of the PGA Tours history, legacy and pro-competitive model not only remains intact, but is supercharged for the future, he wrote in the memo.
PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan said Tuesday on CNBCs Squawk on the Street that after the merger is finalized, which he expects to be in a matter of weeks, the new board is prepared to evaluate every proposal that is presented. Al-Rumayyan is slated to serve as chairman of the board. Whatever it takes thats ... what were committed for, Al-Rumayyan told Faber.

(528 posts)If the saudi's can give trumps son in law soooo much money just think what they gave the PGA(?). "Six months after leaving the White House, Jared Kushner secured a $2 billion investment from a fund led by the Saudi crown prince, a close ally during the Trump administration, despite objections from the fund's advisers about the merits of the deal." The saudi's are trying to launder money and they know that trump is no longer a source, so they are just finding more greedy people to move their money...

At present, 85% of the European Tour's playing membership has received both doses of the vaccine. On the PGA Tour, the number provided is 83%.Oct 21, 2021

(10,095 posts)The Saudis will now control world golf and US oil prices through manipulation of production and refining capacity in the US since they are now the sole owner of the largest oil refinery in the US (in Houston). What else do they own here that no one really knows about? This is not a country or government that is our friend, and they export most of the Islamic terrorists who wreak havoc in many countries, all while constraining the rights of their own citizens, especially women. Not an admirable country.

Especially watching Tigers career, it was one of the real joys in my life. I guess it could be said that it was a pressure release valve of sorts. When LIV came into being and bought a bunch of PGA names, i said that's it, I just wont watch any Majors. I still peeked but did not watch all 4 days as I used to. This decision puts them in the category of NASCAR or Faux Snooze in my view. I wont even take a peek anymore. I am pretty sure Tiger is going to call it a career IMO. I really loved watching that guy play, foibles and all. Maybe Tiger and I will call it a day at the same time, I am not sure about Tiger but I am about me.
Never again.
Steve Schmidt "The warning" has a very good take on this on YT.

(1,987 posts)I don't watch much golf any more (usually a major) but now I am completely done with it. Money is more important than any shred of integrity to the PGA. Now they are in bed with the same Saudi Arabia that is ready to jack up oil prices and the same country that was home to 15 of the 19 Sept. 11th terrorists. I remember back when the Bush administration was trying to gin up support and find excuses to invade Iraq after 9/11 while they continued to kiss Saudi Arabia's backside. And the Trump administration went and did the same shit.
I am waiting to see if the R & A allows Trump Turnberry back into the mix of courses that host The Open now that the PGA is willing to suck up to LIV Golf and the Saudis.

I forgot his name, still playing, but one of the leaders said after Obama was elected that he was quitting golf because Obama taxes on rich will bankrupt him. He never quit, never went broke and still pays practically no taxes. His wealth is trickling down. They are all great with bone saws cash, and will still pay less taxes than us and vote for trump types.
There are 5 big golf courses here in my little mountain county, and are always packed with Florida second home repubs that love the Donald. They contribute to flooding, cut down forests, and pump fertilizer into delicate trout supporting streams creating eutrophication that damage the fish populations. Fuck Golf.

I don't mind that rich people have somewhere safe to graze together. I do think we ought to fence them in rather than allow proliferation. Fair is fairway after all.
As far as the Bone Saw collaboration goes this is one more predictable white-washing of MBS & TFG.
My mother's dad played all over the eastern seaboard in his day with a lifetime handicap of 3. He would be appalled at the LIV+PGA confederation for obvious greed of the PGA, AND the politics of the LIV.
