A woman has been taken into custody 4 days after Ajike 'AJ' Owens was fatally shot after knocking

Source: CNN

A woman was taken into custody Tuesday night in connection with the death of 35-year-old Ajike “AJ” Owens, who was fatally shot last week in central Florida after knocking on a neighbor’s door, a sheriff’s office spokesperson said.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods told reporters Monday his office was rigorously investigating the case, and that authorities were working to determine “whether the deadly force was justified or not.”

Owens’ relatives have said they want the person who killed her arrested and charged.

They say the shooter, identified by police reports only as a 58-year-old White woman, harassed the Black mother and her children and had called them racial slurs prior to Friday’s killing in Marion County outside Ocala.

Looks like the Sheriff was finally shamed into doing something, but it's not clear what if any charges there will be. The woman shot and killed AJ Owens through a closed door.

AJ Owens' family said her kids were playing in a field near an apartment complex when their neighbor, Susan Lorincz, called them racial slurs and yelled at them to get off her land. The kids ran away but accidentally forgot to take an iPad, which the lady took. When AJ's 10-year-old boy came back to retrieve it, she threw a skate at the child.

AJ Owens' mother, Pamela Dias, stated in an interview with MSNBC that this was not the first incident involving this particular neighbor, as confrontations with her had happened numerous times. Sheriff Billy Woods also confirmed in a press conference that police had been called to the address around six to eight times in two and a half years.

On June 6, 2023, the family and friends of AJ Owens held a press conference to demand Justice for AJ. Pamela Dias narrated what had happened and revealed that Susan Lorincz had harassed her grandchildren by calling them profanities like "The N-Word," "The B-Word," and "Slaves" before taking the life of her daughter, who never posed any imminent threat to anyone.

One of AJ's friends also spoke in the press conference about how the landlord had allowed children to play on the field as long as they cleaned up after themselves. Therefore, as a tenant, Susan did not have the authority to ask them to leave. She also stated that the community will not sleep or rest until justice was served.

And it's not Lorincz's land. As AJ's family explains at the above link, the field belongs to the owner of the apartment complex, Lorincz is only a renter there. The landlord had given the kids permission to play on the field.

The 9-year-old boy, who witnessed the shooting, blames himself because he first told his mom the neighbor had confronted him and his siblings.

“In his soul, in his heart, it’s his fault that his older brother, his baby sister and his baby brother, as well as himself, will never see their mother again,” Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, told reporters Wednesday.

Dias, who spoke at a news conference a day after a 58-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the death, said another child also blamed himself because he was unable to perform CPR on his mother.

“Grandma, grandma. I couldn’t save her,” Dias recalled the 12-year-old boy telling her.

snip-"Following a Major Crimes Unit investigation — which included interviews with Owens’s children and other witnesses and uncovered surveillance footage and other forensic and digital evidence — detectives concluded that “over a period of time, Lorincz had become angry at Owens’ children, who were playing in a field close to her home.”

On Friday night, according to the sheriff’s office, Lorincz “engaged in an argument with the children and was overhead yelling at them by a neighbor,” throwing a roller skate at Owens’s 10-year-old son that hit him in the toe. She also swung at Owens’s son and his brother with an umbrella when they attempted to speak to her, the office said. When the children notified their mother, “Owens approached Lorincz’s home, knocked on the door multiple times, and demanded that Lorincz come outside,” the sheriff’s office said."

Wed Jun 7, 2023, 08:14 AM

There would have been too many cops doing too much bullying, being too afraid for their safety. Someone may have reached a breaking point and acting out. That could have caused a reaction which would have been too much for the cops who'd call for more cops. Someone's property may then get damaged, and the media would talk of a riot while guns get drawn and open warfare starts in the street.

The sheriff may well have been acting prudently, playing the scenario out in his head, opting to allowing a time for hearts to quit racing and passions to calm a bit before returning to the scene and arresting the murderer.

BTW, if this were to become a George Floyd moment it would then be upon the Biden people to bring order, no one else can because too many don't even want to. These are tense times and way too many folks have guns without guidance. Imagine waking up from your Fox induced coma to find you've bought a gun you can't afford for a reason that doesn't make sense and committed a homicide you don't understand.

I grew up not far from a couple streets that had rental "quad" houses (that were like 2 twins built side by side and back to back so they each shared a side wall and a back wall with another house), and where they fronted either of the streets. 52. How could she possibly have been able to "forcibly enter" a locked front door?

She was a mom in her 30's. She had no battering ram. She was unarmed. All she did was knock on the door with her fingers.

but maybe Man 1 is easier to convict on? There are gun charges, too. She's going to do 20 years for this at least.

Guns make everything worse.

under Florida law. She's being charged with first-degree manslaughter, rather than murder because investigation did not establish that it was premeditated. First-degree for using a firearm.

Manslaughter with a firearm is assigned a Level 8 offense severity ranking and assessed an additional 18 sentencing points for possession of a firearm under Florida’s Criminal Punishment Code. Absent grounds for a downward departure sentence, a judge is required to sentence a person convicted of manslaughter with a firearm to a minimum sentence of 11½ years in prison, but may also sentence the person up to the statutory maximum of thirty years in prison.

At least this person won't have to listen to the children at play any more.

Horrible tragedy.
