Pat Robertson, conservative evangelist and Christian Coalition founder, dies at 93

Pat Robertson, the conservative evangelist and media mogul who galvanized the modern Christian right, cultivated a massive national following and regularly drew criticism for his incendiary political statements, died Thursday, according to his official broadcasting network. He was 93.
The Christian Broadcasting Network, the organization he founded, did not immediately announce Robertson's cause of death. "Pat Robertson dedicated his life to preaching the Gospel, helping those in need, and educating the next generation," the company said. He was one of the most prominent and influential Christian broadcasters and entrepreneurs in the United States equal parts religious leader and culture warrior.
In a way, Robertson was also a business visionary. He converted a small Virginia television station into a religious broadcasting powerhouse, marrying fiery ideology with 20th-century entertainment technology. He inspired other conservative Christians to take to the airwaves, too. He created the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), home to the talk show The 700 Club, and founded the Christian Coalition, a group that helped mobilize American evangelicals into a conservative political bloc and one of the cornerstones of the modern Republican Party.
Robertson reached the pinnacle of his national celebrity in the 1980s, when social conservatism was ascendant. He ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 1988, a contest ultimately won by George H.W. Bush. But he would remain a kingmaker in the GOP for decades to come, marshaling conservative Christians behind George W. Bush and Donald Trump.

(3,678 posts)Pat Robertson was a Marine Corps infantry captain during the Korean War. Because his father was a US Senator, Robertson never saw combat while every other USMC infantry captain was in combat, most as company commanders.
Robertson, instead, was the Officers' Club manager, a job that allowed him to remain in the rear with the beer where he made frequent flights to Japan to purchase booze to restock the bar.
He also was known to frequent Korean prostitutes.
Google Pat Robertson, Korean War.
Robertson's first child was born on November. 6, 1954. Robertson and his wife were married on August 27, 1954. You do the math.

He called himself "The Liquor and Whore Officer' who kept his superiors stocked and happy. He said he was so successful, they'd never willingly get rid of him.
I've called him the Liquor and Whore Officer ever since. I wouldn't turn my back on him, or leave him alone with my drink, my money or any person or creature I cared about (unless they could beat the crap out of him. Then I'd stay and watch).

(6,786 posts)died and when he got to heaven, he was personally met by St Peter? Moreover, there were legions of angels singing and playing harps. He was amazed at the reception. St. Peter personally showed him to his place in heaven which was a lavish mansion. It was decorated with bunting and a large sign welcoming him to heaven. He turned to St. Peter and said he anticipated what heaven would be like but this far exceeded his wildest dreams. He asked if everyone was treated so royally and St Peter replied "No. This only happens for really special people. I've been here for 2000 years and you are the first Christian Evangelist or Baptist in all that time to make it up here."

(29,307 posts)Pat Robertson passed away this morning.
He used his large platform to claim LGBTQ people cause hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes.
He subscribed to the belief that 9/11 was caused by feminists, queer people, and the ACLU, among others.
In 2010, after a horrific earthquake struck Haiti and killed an estimated 160,000 people, Pat Robertson went on The 700 Club and said that Haitians were to blame, claiming they made a deal with the Devil during their revolt against slavery in 1791.
He never apologized for these incidents. He never attempted to make amends.
So, while I'm sure there are many who will claim we shouldn't speak ill of the dead, I would like to point out that Pat Robertson went out of his way to inflict suffering on innocent people grieving the loss of their loved ones.
I hope his family receives more love than he ever gave us.

(3,200 posts)...also somewhat indirectly, the execrable EWTN network for which she was better known. Mother Angelica was "discovered", more or less, by Robertson in the late '70s, when his CBN network began playing her videotaped shows. Robertson eventually saw her as a threat to his Protestant-centered programming, and kicked her off the network. That gave Mother Angelica and her ridiculous band of radtrad nuns the initiative to start their own network (EWTN) in Alabama. EWTN imitated all of the worst aspects of Bible Belt fundamentalism seen on Robertson's CBN, including a complete hermetically-sealed information system with a simulacrum of a news-gathering organization: the original "fake news". Almost everything on EWTN was cribbed directly from CBN, which served as the template for many similar networks over the past several decades.

Now that I try to find it again via Google, it seems Falwell said it and Robertson agreed. I spit on both their graves. May they have a meet-up in that Hell they claimed to believe in.
From The Guardian, Sept 19, 2001
What Mr Falwell said on Thursday on The 700 Club, while chatting with the programme's host, Mr Robertson, was this: "What we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be minuscule if, in fact, God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve."
Mr Robertson responded: "Jerry, that's my feeling. I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population."
A few moments later Mr Falwell said: "The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularise America, I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.' "
To which Mr Robertson said: "I totally concur, and the problem is we have adopted that agenda at the highest levels of our government."
