Unabomber Ted Kaczynski found dead in prison cell
Source: ABC News
Ted Kaczynski, the convicted terrorist known as the Unabomber, was found dead in his prison cell Saturday morning, according to a Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson. He was 81. Kaczynski was previously in a maximum security facility in Colorado but was moved to a medical facility in North Carolina in December 2021 due to poor health.
Kaczynski, who went nearly 20 years without being captured until his arrest in 1996, was considered America's most prolific bomber. Between 1978 and 1995, Kaczynski placed or mailed 16 bombs that killed three people and injured 23 others, according to authorities.
In 1995, before he was identified as the Unabomber, he demanded newspapers to publish a long manuscript he had written, saying the killings would continue otherwise. Both the New York Times and Washington Post published the 35,000-word manifesto later that year at the recommendation of the U.S. Attorney General and the director of the FBI.
If it hadn't been for the suspicions of his brother and sister-in-law, Kaczynski might never have been caught. Kaczynski's sister-in-law, Linda Patrik, was one of the first to identify Kaczynski as the Unabomber after reading the Unabomber's writing.

After all, Kaczynski killed three people, Trump will destroy an entire nation and likely plunge the world into fascism.

Oh, I was thrilled when he was caught, he was too hard on low paid mail room employees and secretaries who represented many of his victims. His manifesto made sense until about halfway through the first big paragraph, where it became apparent Ted was nuts, a brilliant paranoiac.
I can't celebrate his passing, his life just made me sad because we don't have really good treatments for the kind of demons he was facing. It's why he fled to that cabin and went murderously mad.

(4,671 posts)his cabin in the hills - it was the way in which he expressed his "crazy" dismay about the consequences of uncontrolled advanced technology--bomb making and using bombs across the country to murder and maim--that was the problem.
Neo-Luddites still have some quirky ideas about abstaining from the advantages that advanced hi-technology may bring to society. Just look at the many opinions expressed about the repercussions surrounding the dualities that exist over how (and who) will benefit from AI technology and its impact on the social, political, and educational fabric around the globe; Ted wasn't all wrong about coming repercussions. But his choices about how to bring us to awareness of HIS particular take on advanced technology's futuristic use was incredibly montrous and yet somewhat prescient at the same time. Assault weapons and ghost guns used in mass shootings have more recently killed more than Ted ever did, but instilled the same familar fear, terror, and loss into common daily activities.
My grandfather, born in the US of German immigrants, was employed as a loom wire-weaver for paper production; it was the closure of the corporate fabric and wire textile corporations in MA in the 1930s that brought him to the "rust belt" for work. His craft was then superceded by mechanized looms on which he was trained just prior to his retirement. Voice to text and the EMR have transformed the recordkeeping of medical and allied medical practioners but sure have not contributed much to lowering medical costs for patients nor much improved their care.
