Alito disputes new ProPublica report that says justice failed to disclose trip with billionaire who
Source: CNN
Justice Samuel Alito did not disclose a luxury 2008 trip he took in which a hedge fund billionaire flew him on a private jet, even though the businessman would later repeatedly ask the Supreme Court to intervene on his behalf, ProPublica reported.
In a highly unusual move, Alito preemptively disputed the nature of the report before it published Tuesday night, authoring an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal in which he acknowledged knowing billionaire Paul Singer but downplaying their relationship.
The new report adds to the growing list of ethics questions surrounding the court, which have become a key focus of congressional Democrats. Earlier this year, reporting by ProPublica about a relationship between Justice Clarence Thomas and a frequent Republican donor led to calls for greater transparency about the financial disclosure process for the Supreme Court.
The publication said Singer flew Alito to Alaska on a private jet and that the justice did not report the fishing trip or the private jet flight on his annual financial disclosure or recuse himself from cases involving Singers hedge fund that came before the court. In the years following the 2008 trip, the billionaires hedge fund came before the court at least 10 times in cases where his role was often covered by the legal press and mainstream media, ProPublica reported.

(23,175 posts)he lied about protecting Roe. If he lies about one thing, he'll lie about another.
If he actually represented a religion, you know, as a member, not from the bench of the (formerly)supreme court pretending to be a judge, you can bet his robes would be ermine and as he left any place after visiting, he'd either be zipping his pants or dabbing a napkin at his mouth. He's not giving up power, ease, or any other of the 7 sins he practices.

GOP judicial kingmaker Leonard Leo, who also features in the ongoing Clarence Thomas scandal and seemingly everything else that's shady in the courts, reportedly helped organize the Alaska trip. According to ProPublica, Leo invited Singer and asked if he and Alito whose Supreme Court confirmation Leo helped secure in 2006 could fly on the billionaires jet. Singer and the fishing lodge owner were both major donors to Leos political groups, the nonprofit outlet reported.
In Alitos Wall Street Journal op-ed, published hours before the ProPublica report on Tuesday, he argued that he didnt have to recuse from matters involving entities connected to Singer, nor did he have to disclose gifts from the fishing trip on his 2008 disclosure. Far from helping his case, however, Alito made himself look even worse.
For starters, it's beyond weird for a Supreme Court justice to publish such an op-ed. The court has a public information office. Recall that the Journal's opinion page earlier this year published an interview with Alito that likewise served as a safe platform for airing his grievances. The op-ed takes it to the next level. To be clear, Alito made a deliberate choice to speak through the Journal's opinion page that represents the nation's Republican elite. He wasn't speaking to the American people but to particular people. His people.
Digging into the substance of his argument, Alito claimed he didnt know Singer was connected to the 2014 case because Singers name wasnt listed in the court documents, and the justice further claimed that, even if he knew of Singers involvement, he wouldnt have had to recuse anyway. But Alitos claim that he didnt know Singer was connected to the case is suspect, because even the justices beloved Wall Street Journal opinion page noted at the time of the decision the well-known fact that the named entity in the long-running case, NML Capital, was a subsidiary of Singers Elliott Management.

(125 posts)In his op-ed, Alito said that he has spoken to Singer on no more than a handful of occasions with the exception of small talk during a fishing trip 15 years ago and said the ProPublica charges against him are not valid.
So if he barely knew Singer then what is he doing taking such a lavish vacations gifts from him?
If he did know him then why didn't he recuse himself from cases that Singer had a direct interest in?
