US Supreme Court turns away case on charter school's mandatory skirts for girls

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) -The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a North Carolina public charter school's defense of its blocked requirement that girls wear skirts - a student uniform policy that its founder explained is aimed at treating women like "fragile vessels."

Turning away an appeal by Charter Day School Inc, the justices left in place a lower court's decision that the dress code discriminated against students based on gender in violation the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment promise of equal protection under the law.

Charter schools in North Carolina are tuition-free, open to attendance by all, and receive state funding for each student. They are run by private, nonprofit corporations rather than a public school district.

At issue in the case was whether Charter Day School in the southeastern North Carolina town of Leland, which offers a "traditional-values-based education" to students from kindergarten to Grade 8, was subject to the Constitution's equal protection provision when it enforced the skirt policy.

of misconduct by justices and the call for external ethics regulations. No, they can't be fired, but could they be fined for ethics violations?

Also, the misconduct of the justices feeds into calls for expansion of the court, which would reduce the power of the RW justices.

How the state can pay for education but have ZERO input on what goes on there.

I bet that, in another decade, we'll start hearing about all of the sexual abuse, hazing, discrimination, etc. in testimony from all the kids that are experiencing this trauma in the name of god.

They like to make girls wear skirts kept in perfect position and condition, so winter cold and various pests can access their bodies more easily, and so it is more difficult to do anything physically active.

we actually do them right in illinois. no for profits, no religions.
there are many great 1s here in chi. an award winning stem school is around the corner from me.
my son worked in a u of c charter in bronzeville. local school, took all comers. great track record.
the teacher’s union has 1, there are arts and science schools. there’s even 1 called namaste, where they teach non-violence and meditation.

public schools should get whatever they need. but 1 size never did fit all, and the local public school is not an ‘appropriate education’ for a lot of kids.
this tactic works cuz a whooooole lot of parents dont love their local school.

They just had to have green and beige. “Bottoms “could be shorts, skirts, skorts, jumpers, pants as long as it was beige. Tops had to be green. There was nothing in the policy about what clothing was masculine vs feminine.

Taught summer school in a district with a similar policy. Beige or green bottoms (could be pants, skirts, etc) and tops were either white or green (school colors). They offered some inexpensuve golf type shirts to parents and some businesses sponnsored uniform scholarships.

If everyone wears basically the same thing, it cuts down on some of the economic issues when you have a district with both high poverty and a high wealth section.

Honestly, wish where I taught most of my career was like that. Of course, none of the public schools care if girls wear pants, skirts, dresses, etc as long as they color compliant.

Mandated uniforms: The kids still have competition over their attire. It only transfers to accessories like backpacks and shoes in the primary schools. Handbags/wallets and jewelry get added in the secondary level. Even makeup falls prey to class distinction.

My nephew's wife attended an upscale boarding school. Back then, you could accessorize those old flip cellphones with specialty straps or chains hanging from them. I didn't even know Dior had made a platinum cellphone strap until she told me about it, and I bet you didn't know that, either. I can assure you, though, that she knew it, because her classmates turned even something as mundane as a cellphone bauble into a status symbol.

They could have just made the dress code uniform. All students wear pants although it would have been fun if they tried to screw with their critics and have all students wear dresses, no matter their gender.

several programs that were a part of his National Recovery Act/New Deal (NRA). President Roosevelt, began discussing expanding the number of SCOTUS Justices. Some think, he purposely started the rumor, that he had ulterior motives (like saving his new Social Security bill)! So how serious was FDR at the time about SCOTUS expansion, even talking about increasing the court to a total 16? (OY)? Suppose that can always be left open for debate.

Point being, I wonder if this isn't more appeasment? Supreme Court throwing us a bone, attempting to placate. Especially Chief Justice Roberts, surprisingly moderate rulings (now & then anyway).

High school because of the stupid uniforms girls were forced to wear. It was a polyester 1 piece monstrosity with a zipper in front. Even in the largest size would rip bit by bit when I crammed into the shoulders. It gave me a camel toe from hell and felt like I was being cut in two.Sitting down was painful.I sweated like crazy in it. So I wore shorts and a t shirt in the same colors as the boys uniform.

They said I had to wear that shitty girls uniform.
I so wanted to wear the comfortable cotton t shirt and loose fitting shorts the boys had.

I showed them the largest size girl uniform did not fit me. I asked to wear a boys uniform.
They said no so I hooked gym class all through middle and high school.Spent every day in detention during gym.

I was not going to stand being humiliated and feel vulnerable wearing that awful uniform. After being assaulted sexually by boys and stared at by the womens gym teacher because of that uniform I vowed to never wore that shit again. Fuck gym class. I hated gym.Glad I missed it.

Gender enforced dress codes are bullshit can be exploiting of girls, show stuff they'd rather not show everybody.

Ever notice how much better designed and the better fabrics and better pockets mens clothes are made with? I love wearing mens clothes that fit,are comfy and align with my real gender.

Glad I am a out transguy in more ways everyday.
