Ukraine holds disaster drills amid fears Russia could sabotage nuclear power plant

Source: ABC News

Amid fears Russia might blow up the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Ukraine has been holding drills to prepare emergency services with how to deal with a potential radioactive disaster.

ABC News was invited to the drills in the city of Zaporizhzhia this week, about 30 miles from the plant, where firefighters in hazmat gear simulated decontaminating people from radiation during an evacuation.

Emergency workers demonstrated scanning civilians with Geiger counters as they disembarked buses, stripping some civilians and hosing them with water as they lay on stretchers. Firefighters in yellow suits sprayed down vehicles and moved them through a large washer system rigged up between fire trucks.

Ukrainian officials have been sounding increasingly dire warnings around the nuclear plant that Russia has occupied since early in the war. This week, Ukraine's chief of military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, claimed Russia had now completed preparation to potentially sabotage the plant if it chooses.

So is this how it all ends? Some reports say July 5th.

Maybe it’s time for some serious back up and to hell with Putin.

I still do not understand what greater harm, or risk of a bigger war, will happen if NATO just come in full bore and uses F-35s, and the best artillery systems and tanks and pushes the orcs out by the end of summer.

But but but but WW3!
News Flash: One of, if not the, key operators in any perceived WW would be Russia....and we now know how disfunctional they are. And who exactly will come to their aid who hasn't already? China is more interested in Western trade dollars, especially with their own faltering economy. Iran is already working with them.

I guess the fear is if American soldiers die it will be a bad political move. Yes I can see MTG and the rest of the Magats making hay after the first soldier is killed. But honestly, a victory is about protecting the world's democracies. Its a stand against Fascism spreading again. If it was framed right, even the majority of Republicans would still support the push I believe. Maybe support would wane at first, but once victory was declared, and the celebrations began in Ukraine, waving US flags in appreciation, i think the political fall out would disappear

NK isn’t attacked…cause it’s got just a handful of the monstrous weapons.

There will always be a nuclear threat, unfortunately. The last arms treaty emphasized the acronym MAD for a reason. That will be there regardless how this war goes, or if it ever began in the first place. Just because one of the participants is in trouble because of an ill advised invasion, the West must still believe in the idea of MAD preventing any side from shooting the first missile, and assume Russia will too.

We don't have any other choice.

Well we do I guess.....anytime Russia terrorizes and brutalizes, rapes, pillages another country and simply says to us "Tsk Tsk.....don't even think about helping out this victimized country or we will push the button", and so we immediately capitulate and roll out the red carpet. We could do that sure.

But that kind of appeasement will only lead to tyranny and disaster for people the world over. The only option is to not let that threat guide our decisions and hope that smarter heads prevail for the authorities in Russia.

Because Russian leaders know, or should know, that if they dare to use nuclear weapons, for one, they risk nuclear blowback against their own cities. And if they started it, it would be all blame on them. Second, even more countries would join up against them. There would be a greater effort to defeat the Russian army. And their country would be subject to greater international scorn and punishment than even now.

who cares little for humanity. Wouldn't the nuclear radiation fallout from bombing a power plant affect parts of Russia?

Either way, he has well and truly fucked his country…and likely, himself.

And yet, I wonder how many more Ukrainians (and Russians) will die because of that piece of shit’s ego and delusions.
