Republican state officials threaten legal action over company diversity policies
Source: Reuters
A group of Republican U.S. state attorney generals on Thursday warned the country's largest companies that certain workforce diversity policies could be illegal in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision effectively striking down affirmative action in higher education.
The 13 officials in letters sent to the 100 largest U.S. companies said the court last month made clear that any policy that treats people differently because of their race is illegal, even when it is adopted with good intentions.
The attorney generals urged the companies to abandon race-based quotas or preferences in hiring, promotion and contracting and threatened legal action "sooner rather than later" if they do not.
"Companies that engage in racial discrimination should and will face serious legal consequences," the attorney generals wrote.

(7,790 posts)it was struck down in education... so they're generalizing it unto ALL situations in life? This sounds like where it's going. Surely that SCOTUS ruling wasn't that generalized?

(9,056 posts)if I were the CEO. In addition I would inform them that I have ordered a top to bottom assessment of all business we conduct with the state and creation of a schedule for termination of that business. Lastly I would inform them that our purchasing would now look to avoid businesses from those states. I would close my letter by indicating that I have also directed that our philanthropic activities in those states will terminate with those funds going to other states.
Of course, being the polite professional that I am, I would not fail to include Sincerely before my signature.

(3,720 posts)It will reach a point where the differences in law between Republican-led vs. Democratic-led states will be so stark that a company won't be able to operate in both places at the same time. We'll be a bifurcated society. We'll have to change the country's name from United States of America to just States of America. Or, more accurately, Federated States of America.
