Oldest Black fraternity moves 2025 convention out of Florida over 'racist' policies

July 26 (UPI) -- The oldest Black intercollegiate fraternity in the country is moving its 2025 convention out of Florida, citing what it said was Gov. Ron DeSantis' "harmful, racist, and insensitive policies against the Black Community."

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, which was founded in 1906 at Cornell University and whose membership includes civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Thurgood Marshall, announced the convention's relocation from Orlando on Wednesday.

"Although we are moving our convention from Florida, Alpha Phi Alpha will continue to support the strong advocacy of Alpha brothers and other advocates fighting against the continued assault on our communities in Florida by Gov. Ron DeSantis, the fraternity's General President Dr. Willis L. Lonzer III, said in a statement.

Alpha Phi Alpha's 99th General Convention and 119th Anniversary Convention in Orlando was expected to generate several million dollars for the state, according to the fraternity.

Hit FL where it hurts...the wallet. That's all the state government will understand.
I am sorry for the residents who will potentially be impacted but DeSantis needs to learn a hard, painful lesson.

Vote Republican, get Republican policies, then receive logical blowback from them.

There's a reason Republican and Racist start with "R."

and voted against DeSantis. That said, I think they did the right thing to change the location of their convention. The only thing that Republicans understand is $$. There must be consequences for what he's doing.

Other groups have also canceled this year, so I hope businesses will put pressure on DeSantis to stop this "war on woke."

AZ is celebrating MLK Day. The last one in. After the NFL pulled the Super Bowl.

Hitting them in that pocketbook DOES work. It may take some time - it took a year of black residents refusing to use ANY public transit in Montgomery, AL, for a change to start to happen.

GA now has 2 DEMOCRATIC Senators and voted for a Democrat for President for the first time since 1992.

in 2 state-wide races, which were the result of run-offs.

Point being that the "fire is lit" and it's a matter of getting people to vote in EVERY election, not just every 2 years or every 4 years so they can ungerrymander the state.

The thing about GA is that there are a pile of "northern transplants" down there (including some of my close relatives for some reason, and some former coworkers). So there has been some shift there like NC saw (although NC seems to need to kick it back in gear again), and the end result over time could eventually be similar to what has happened in Virginia.

It's probably why the travel/tourist media has ratcheted up the negative talk about places like Chicago and San Francisco, literally out of nowhere. They have initiated their RW slimeing-the-blue agenda.
