July 29 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that an African initiative could be a basis for peace in Ukraine but that Ukrainian attacks made it hard to realise.
He was speaking at a press conference after meeting African leaders in St Petersburg on Friday and hearing their calls for Moscow to move ahead with their plan.
"There are provisions of this peace initiative that are being implemented," he said. "But there are things that are difficult or impossible to implement."

(14,688 posts)His attempt to create mass starvation in Africa is plainly to amp up the pressure for Ukraine to cede land and keep him out of prison.
Just add it to the list of crimes against humanity that ghoul has already committed.

(1,963 posts)... because they are the only ones who can stop the war crimes from continuing. Unless you have the very rare situations, where a Hitler is actually fully defeated in his own capitol.
In Northern Ireland formerly bitter rivals negotiated a fragile peace deal in the late 1990s, which proved sustainable and remains in force. Nobody got it quite as they wanted - but killing, terror and unrest stopped, and was replaced by security and increased welfare. The tensions over the divided Ireland persist, but now mostly as political discussions, which continuously lead to new negotiated agreements between the parties.
Though the situation with Russia's brutal war seems far away from such good solutions, this will be what will happen - or no one will survive.

The Russians can have peace today if they just leave.

(1,963 posts)Good point about Afghanistan. The US and it's coalition forces left in 2021, after years of unfilled promises about bringing freedom. Left without good negotiations, just leaving the population in the hands of oppressors even more evil than Putin's soldiers. There was an agreement with the US, signed by the very force the US had been trying to fight for decades, the Taliban. And now the Taliban and the US are cooperating in providing US humanitarian assistance to the country...
Russia might give up in Ukraine, but even that will be followed with negotiations. It always are, because even "enemies" has to agree on living together in this world. Russia and Ukraine are still cooperating on exporting Russian gas and oil through Ukrainian pipelines to the West, since they both are making big money on that trade!
Biden is also trying to restart negotiations with North Korea. He even is succeeding in making deals with the Republicans, because he knows to do what is necessary.

(28,461 posts)I could see hitting the Al-Qaeda bases there since the goverment in charge of Afghanistan was granting them a safe haven but we should have withdrawn as soon as that was done rather than try to force a change in government upon the people there.
Instead the Republicans were determined to keep us there and it cost the lives of so many US soldiers not to mention wasting billions upon billions of taxpayer monies.
