Paul Reubens, Pee-wee Herman Actor, Dies at 70 After Private Bout of Cancer

Source: Variety

Paul Reubens, the actor best known for portraying Pee-wee Herman, died Sunday night after a private bout of cancer. He was 70.

“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years,” wrote Reubens in a statement posted to Instagram after his death. “I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”

“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,” wrote Reubens’ estate in the caption. “Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”

Reubens began his career in the 1970s after joining the Los Angeles live comedy troupe the Groundlings as an improvisational comedian and stage actor.

Tim Burton's underrated masterpiece of a film.

When at what remains of The Alamo complex in downtown San Antonio in March of 2018(the anniversary of the final siege), the topic of the basement came up. THERE IS NO BASEMENT at the Alamo!

HBO/Showtime were desperate for material and repeated a lot of shows - I'm sure I saw Star Wars 20 times in a few months. One of them was The Pee-Wee Herman Show - a proto-Pee-Wee's Playhouse - where he was essentially a kid's show host but the humor was geared in a goofy way toward adults. He had a lot of other famous people on it who got their start in the Groundlings like he did - Phil Hartman, John Moody, John Paragon, Edie McClurg, and others. And it was ALWAYS funny no matter how many times you watched it.

He'll be missed.

I had that show on beta and VHS and watched it a dozen times. My kids now recite lines whenever appropriate. Phil Hartman was a scene stealer.😉

One of the joys of being a sprog's parent in the late 80s/early 90s was having a legit reason to watch Pee Wee's Playhouse. It was cute enough for the kids, but had its grownup moments that I could enjoy, too.

One of my favorites was when Cowboy Curtis (Laurence Fishburne!) came for a visit. He clomped over to sit on Sofie the Sofa and put his booted feet on the table. I'll let the dialogue do the rest...

PeeWee: Gee, Cowboy Curtis, you sure have big feet.

Cowboy Curtis: Well, you know what that means, don't you?

::: Perfect lingering pause with hyper-white Pee Wee staring fake-wide-eyedat black and beautiful Curtis::::

PeeWee: No, what does it mean?

Cowboy Curtis: Bigger boots!

Color the sprog bewildered when I fell off my chair laughing at that one. It was definitely *not* a joke for the sprog, but for the parents watching with their kids.

Paul was in Columbus, OH's July 4 Doo Dah Parade about 15 years ago on his bike. When he rode in
front of my son and I I called out to him, "Hey Paul." To which he responded with his trade mark laugh,
waved, and rang his bike bell.

My “lover” and I — had our Saturday morning coffee accompanied by Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. It was a brief pleasure during those terrible days. A ritual.

Thank you, Paul. You were the subversive hilarity we needed and the sweet hope we longed for.

In a biker bar.

I think it was "Hamburger Dude" from a Cheech and Chong movie.

They fucked Tommy Chong over on bullshit too.

Not hard to see a pattern there.

They didn't like what Pee Wee represented.

Fuck Poppy Bush and Bill Barr with their hippy hating bullshit.

I was in the original Pee Wee HBO show from 1981, playing one of the singing neighbours, Mr. Jelly Donut. It was a great experience watching that incredible show develop in such a relatively short time. Paul had a vision of what he wanted to do, and by damn he did it!

And as things worked out last night. Went home and started watching a documentary on TUBI and the first half hour was about his incident in Fl. and how backwards we are that with everything else going on that was a major issue for the right then their howling which led to our 1st female Surgeon General being fired by a president who did what he did with a cigar.

Our hang up about a natural process is stunning. A lot of the movies on TUBI are nothing but violence and gore there must be 15000 zombie movies but show pubic hair and OMFG…the worlds gonna end. FFS
