NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Tennessee Reps. Justin Pearson and Justin Jones, who became Democratic heroes as members of the Tennessee Three, reclaimed their legislative seats Thursday after they were expelled for involvement in a gun control protest on the House floor.
The young Black lawmakers were reinstated by local officials after being booted from the GOP-dominated Statehouse, but only on an interim basis. They advanced Thursday through a special election to fully reclaim their positions. Both faced opponents in districts that heavily favor Democrats and easily defeated them according to unofficial results from the Tennessees Secretary of States office.
Jones, who lives in Nashville, was up against Republican candidate Laura Nelson. Meanwhile, Pearson, from Memphis, faced independent candidate Jeff Johnston. I think if we keep running this race, there will be victory after victory after victory, Pearson said to supporters on Thursday. He stressed that his victory was largely possible due to Black women and the organizing work they had done to make him and other politicians successful.
Thursdays election came as lawmakers are preparing to return to Nashville later this month for a special session to address possibly changing the states gun control laws. While Jones and Pearsons reelection to their old posts wont make a significant dent to the Republican supermajority inside the Legislature, they are expected to push back heavily against some of their GOP colleagues policies.

Lets send a clear message to everyone who thought they could silence the voice of District 86, Pearson tweeted earlier this month. You cant expel a movement!

(29,685 posts)In this case, it will give these talented young man a national platform and that's a plus, but I cannot believe the Republicans would rather fritter away the voters' time and money by forcing this redundant election than actually pass laws to help people.
Think. Again.

(13,560 posts)They dont care about taxpayers money except for their rich donors. Abbott and Paxton have filed enough wasteful lawsuits against the federal government just because they can That have wasted millions of dollar. Paxton did some big investigation after the 2020 election where he was going to show huge voter fraud in Democratic counties. After $22 million, he found 11 cases where registered voters had the wring address. Republicans waste money all the time, and they have no concern about actually helping people. Look what DeSantis has done in Florida. He is helping no one who truly needs help.

(16,508 posts)East Nashville/Donelson State Rep seat left open by the recent death of the incumbent. Behn defeated the temporary replacement who had been appointed by the Nashville Metro Council. She is a firecracker and will be up there fighting side by side with the Tennessee Three in the next session.

"...Behn will face Republican David Hooven in the general election on Sept. 14, though Hooven has an uphill battle in the historically Democratic district. The election was specially called to fill the seat left vacant by the death of longtime Rep. Bill Beck, D-Nashville.
Behn, whose professional background is in social work and public policy, is the campaign director for Rural Organizing, a national organization aimed at mobilizing rural communities around progressive policy issues.
The Knoxville native previously served as an organizer with the Tennessee Justice Center and Indivisible. Her work in rural economic development and politics has led her to organize across the state, she said in an interview prior to the election.
...
Behn pitched herself as a potential new political voice in the Nashville legislative delegation, with reproductive health care, gun reform, caregiver support and housing access among her top priorities. She's been critical of large corporate tax cuts approved by the legislature in recent years, in addition to the controversial Titans stadium deal.
Behn is also vocal about the need for more women in the Tennessee General Assembly, which consistently trails the rest of the country for female representation in state legislatures."

(23,441 posts)Did any of the racists change their stripes? Did any of them change their views on gun control? Women's rights? Minority rights? LGBQT+ rights? Voting rights? Will any of the racists sitting in the tn house treat these young men more respectfully? I probably know the answer to my questions, but still must ask
Proud of these guys. They are dedicated. They are tough. They are brave. They are great examples of their generation!
