Democrat who doesn't want Biden to run again: 'We're at grave risk of another Trump presidency'

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: The Hill

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.), who has criticized President Biden’s reelection efforts, expressed his concern that a rematch between Biden and former President Trump could result in a second Trump term.

“We’re at grave risk of another Trump presidency,” Phillips said in an interview published Thursday in The Washington Post. “I’m doing this to prevent a return of Donald Trump to the White House.”

Phillips has grown increasingly vocal in his opposition to Biden’s efforts to seek another term in office — much to the chagrin of many of his Democratic colleagues. While Phillips praises Biden’s legislative achievements, calling them “historic in nature” to the Post, he has said he thinks it’s in Biden’s and the Democratic party’s best interests for the president to step aside.

“I want him to preserve his legacy, not to compromise it,” Phillips told the Post. “And this is exactly why I’m asking — pass the torch, open the stage.”

and it leans further Democratic than the state as a whole:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota%27s_3rd_congressional_district

Phillips 2018: 55.61%-44.19%; Klobuchar 62.3%-34.7% (statewide 60.3%-36.2%)
Phillips 2020: 55.61%-44.32%; Biden 58.7%-39.2% (statewide 51.3%-46.8%)
Phillips 2022: 59.56%-40.37%; Walz 59.2%-38.13% (52.3%-44.6%)

I don't see Amy Klobuchar is in a "strong RW district". She's won Minnesota handily, and her predecessor was a Democrat too. Do you see Minnesota as "strong RW"?

because without them we can't win a majority in the House. And I understand that sometimes, depending on which part of the country they represent, Dem moderates will cast votes or make compromises that I might not personally like very much. That's fine.

What I don't really get is this kind of overt act of sabotage that isn't going to do anything to help Rep. Phillips get re-elected. It just looks more like grandstanding for the sake of grandstanding.

and he has been vague in his talks with "prospective candidates/donors."

What one should ask him is whether he really thinks that a candidate, any candidate, can start a Presidential campaign six months before the first primary. Even Whiny, a well known entity started a year earlier.

Humphrey was different, never participated in any primary and we know how it ended.

It’s a totally safe Dem seat. Dems could run a left-of-Sanders socialist and win the 3rd district.

Phillips’ moderation isn’t a political necessity, it’s a lobbying tool to bring in big corporate donors.

Phillips won by almost 20 points in 2020, and it was the strongest district for Biden in the state.

I cannot find the results of the presidential data by district, but if one goes by the winners of the Congressional districts, all the winners, of either party won by 48-56% (Phillips by 55%).

The Fourth and the Fifth districts, representing the core cities of Minneapolis and St, Paul, the winners won by 63% and 64%.

Biden/Harris won by 52.4%

It’s a super safe blue district, as are most Problem Solvers’ districts, negating the need for their performative centrism as a ploy to please their constituents.

He would not say who he thinks should run, but he floated possible other viable candidates including Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), who is on Biden’s reelection advisory board and supports his reelection campaign.

He is my representative and has been effective. He is of the class of 2018 in a suburb of Minneapolis that has had an R since forever.

Yes, a moderate which fits the district. But all of a sudden he is a disappointment. First, he proposed a year round DST which has been proven a disaster for Minnesota. Then coming with "replacing Biden" before last midterms which I thought was irresponsible. And now he wants Feinstein to step down.

Interestingly, he started making the rounds promoting himself but last Sunday on Chuck Todd was talking about governors from the Midwest: MN Walz, WI Evers, MI Whitmer, IL Pritzker

Here is the exchange about party own spoilers:

https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/meet-press-august-13-2023-n1307028

CHUCK TODD:

The case against what you're talking about is basically the history of our lifetimes, okay? You go back, the last four sitting presidents who had serious primary challengers, that party lost the White House.

REP. DEAN PHILLIPS:

But Chuck, why did they--

CHUCK TODD:

We can go back to LBJ, but also Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush.

REP. DEAN PHILLIPS:

But why were they primaried? Because people recognized they were weakened. The country was ready to turn the page
