Fired founder of right-wing org Project Veritas is under investigation in New York

NEW YORK -- The founder of Project Veritas, a conservative nonprofit known for its hidden camera stings, is under investigation by a suburban New York prosecutors office in the latest fallout after his ouster from the group over allegations that he mistreated workers and misspent organization funds.
The Westchester County district attorneys office confirmed Friday it is "looking into" matters concerning James OKeefe, who was suspended in February and later fired as chairman and CEO. The Project Veritas board said he spent an excessive amount of donor funds on personal luxuries.
Jin Whang, a spokesperson for District Attorney Mimi Rocah, declined to discuss the subject or details of the investigation, or what potential charges, if any, OKeefe could face. Whang cautioned that investigations can have a variety of outcomes, not necessarily resulting in criminal charges.
News of the probe was first reported by The Nation. OKeefes lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, blamed the investigation on disgruntled former employees of Project Veritas who had a problem with their CEO using too many car services to pay for fundraising efforts which paid their salaries.

Exclusive: James OKeefe Is Now Under Investigation for Looting Project Veritas
Liz Farkas and Matthew Phelan
James OKeefe, the founder and until this past February CEO of the right-wing nonprofit Project Veritas, is currently under investigation by the Westchester County District Attorneys Office.
While the exact nature of the investigation is not yet public, the timing would suggest that it relates to OKeefes alleged financial improprieties during his tenure as the groups chairman and CEO. Back in February, OKeefe was accused of spending an excessive amount of donor funds in the last three years on personal luxuries by the conservative nonprofits own board of directors, amid their very public feud over the management and future of Veritas. Westchester DA Miriam Rocahs probe follows a raft of civil lawsuits, criminal investigations, and six-figure court losses that have trailed the group under OKeefes leadershipincluding a still-active federal investigation into the theft of property belonging to President Bidens daughter Ashley Biden.
We dont talk about how we start our investigations, the Westchester County DAs director of public affairs, Jin Whang, said when reached by phone. But if you want confirmation that we were and are, then yes. We can confirm that.
Attorneys for Project Veritas also filed a civil complaint against OKeefe in federal court this past May, accusing the ostensible investigative reporting outfits original hidden-camera sting artist of breaching his contract and fiduciary duties to the group, among other counts. Despite that pending litigation, made public alongside a detailed new timeline reiterating the boards own version of its disputes and grievances with OKeefe, Veritas says that the organization did not prompt the Westchester DAs investigation into its former leader via a formal criminal referral.
