Twitter Removes Its 'No Political Ads' Policy Ahead of the 2024 Election
Source: Gizmodo
Twitter, rebranded as X, is bringing political ads back to its platform for the first time since 2019, the company announced on Tuesday. The move comes ahead of the 2024 presidential election and Twitter claims it is hiring employees to expand Twitters safety and election teams.
The company claims it will battle any misinformation pushed by the political advertisements, despite Musk having laid off much of the staff who monitored false information, hateful conduct, and targeted harassment. But in light of the elections, Twitter claims it is necessary to allow political ads on its platform so people can talk about their interests in real-timeand Twitter can get paid while they do that talking, of course.
Were updating this policy to make sure we strike the right balance between tackling the most harmful types of contentthose that could intimidate or deceive people into surrendering their right to participate in a civic processand not censoring political debate, Twitter said in a blog post.
Former Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, implemented the rule prohibiting political ads in response to accusations against Facebook for profiting from the spread of misinformation. At the time, Facebook did not fact-check political ads.

(7,712 posts)Every right-wing ad I see on Twitter I mark as not interested in this ad.
Im teaching their algorithms that I wont buy their advertisers products and services.
Elmo cant defeat the invisible hand of the marketplace on this one.😂😂

(42,409 posts)I used to do the same thing on Facebook and it never seemed to make a difference. Now I'm gone from Facebook for a number of reasons, including the advertising, but that's only one of them. I think they "opted" ME out.

(7,712 posts)It doesnt do anything but tell Twitters computers I dont want this advertising which means less future advertising revenue for that advertiser because of fewer views.
Me, one viewer among millions of other people. So, yeah, in reality it does nothing statistically by itself.
But its all I can do so I do it. 😂

(7,395 posts)Didn't Xitter already shed millions of its users to other sites because of the smell of Musk?
I recall something like 30 million people signed onto Threads within the first day of availability. Also, something like 102 million after 3 days.
Then there are other sites more decentralized like Mastodon and Bluesky (which was championed by Jack Dorsey).
The ones that stayed are already mostly right-wingers, and umm.... OnlyFans wannabes.
In my Xitter feed I have lots of young women posting scantily-clad selfies.
Not really a complaint, just an observation. Heh. I don't post on that site anymore anyway, and rarely have done so in the first place, even before it was infected by Elon.
I haven't done social media in more than a year in any case, and likely won't be an avid user of it, in any form.
So, those political ads really won't bring in anyone that isn't already right-wing.

(52 posts)It's particularly scary how dependant our nation is on Mr Musk. His Space X is currently the only way to get astronauts to and from the ISS.
He currently controls about 80% of the charging stations in the US. Any green energy policies need Eloon's blessings.
Stable Mabel has admitted to taking ketamine (which causes erratic behavior). His staff say he has been acting increasingly unhinged. He suffers from mood swings and public breakdowns.
This damaged little man-baby controls a huge social media platform, dictates our space program and owns the future of electrical vehicles.
