Canada, citing potential dangers, warns LGBTQ travelers of US risks

Source: Reuters

OTTAWA, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Canada, citing the risk of potential dangers, is advising LGBTQ travelers planning trips to the United States to check how they might be affected by recently passed laws in some states, Ottawa said on Tuesday. Anti-LGBTQ demonstrations in the United States last year rocketed 30-fold compared with 2017 and legal moves to restrict LGBTQ rights are on the rise.

Canada's travel advisory for the United States now includes a cautionary message for those who consider themselves two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning or intersex - or 2SLGBTQI+ for short.

"Some states have enacted laws and policies that may affect 2SLGBTQI+ persons," the advisory says. "Check relevant state and local laws." The advisory did not specify which states it was referring to.

The U.S. State Department said the United States was committed to "promoting tolerance, inclusion, justice, and dignity" while advancing the rights of the LGBTQ community and was prepared to work with like-minded partners from across the world in doing so. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, asked why the advice had been updated, said the Canadian government employed experts "to look carefully around the world and to monitor whether there are particular dangers to particular groups of Canadians."

Only avoiding mass embarrassment to a friend prevents it…but for how long?

If America goes full MAGA…will be a lot of former friends.

As a gay man, I definitely have to be cognizant of where I travel. Even countries that are generally progressive still have segments of the population that absolutely are not.

Canada also has hate speech laws, crimes in themselves…America does not,

Not massive but concerning…the statistics haven’t caught up yet to the times…good statistics by government expert statisticians here…

Gun control and hate speech laws, universal health care inclusive of transgender…no crazy pockets of crazies…and a larger liberal population, no fox or like…safe haven!

Or better yet, deny the US your tourist $ and keep yourself safe. I wish this country weren't so backwards.

Canada is advising travelers to the U.S. to be wary of state laws affecting LGBTQ+ people.

Driving the news: "Some states have enacted laws and policies that may affect 2SLGBTQI+ persons," the advisory states, adding that travelers should check relevant state and local laws.

The caution, which is for people who identify as two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning or intersex, did not specify which states it was referring to.

The big picture: There has been an uptick in legislation targeting the LGBTQ+ community in the U.S. over the last several years, with 495 such bills introduced by lawmakers in 46 states this year alone, per the American Civil Liberties Union.

Lawmakers in several red states have also introduced new laws targeting transgender rights and gender-affirming care for minors.
In June, the Human Rights Campaign declared a state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people living in the U.S. – the first time the organization made such a warning in its 40-year history...................
