Judge orders default judgment, sanctions against Rudy Giuliani in election workers' lawsuit

Source: CNBC

A federal judge on Wednesday issued a default judgment against former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and imposed sanctions on him in a civil conspiracy lawsuit filed by two Georgia election workers he had claimed mishandled ballots in the 2020 presidential contest.

Judge Beryl Howell sanctioned Giuliani for failing to comply with demands for documents and other evidence sought in the case by lawyers for the election workers, Rudy Freeman and Wandrea’ ArShaye Moss.

Howell also ordered attorneys for Giuliani and the two women to propose three possible dates for trial on the question of how much monetary damages he should be ordered to pay them as a result of the default judgment.

Giuliani was indicted two weeks ago with former President Donald Trump and 17 co-defendants by a grand jury in Atlanta on charges related to an alleged conspiracy to illegally overturn Trump’s loss in 2020 to President Joe Biden.

Is this a case where Giuliani got to hide incriminating evidence that might lead to other problems for him? Also, for the MAGA narrative does this mean they can pretend that a default judgment never really proved that Rudy defamed anyone?

Just wondering why he would be so stupid as to not follow the process, especially when he's supposed to be a lawyer.

that he probably figured he was untouchable by then. Just imagine the “rarified air” feeling you’d get if you were working in the White House. The WHITE HOUSE! Working almost literally at the elbow of the PRESIDENT himself. In and out of the Oval Office all day, and probably into the night. And getting endless calls from THAT phone in THAT office.

Where you were treated with the greatest deference by EVERYBODY, because you were the President’s right-hand man.

I can easily imagine that going straight to his head. The “little one” as well as the big one at the top of his neck, because I bet there were women all over the place and if they couldn’t get to trump, Rudy would be close enough.

And then to fall. From those loftiest of heights. MAN! What a comedown. Like Icarus, falling to earth (and death) after he’d soared so high he got too close to the sun, and it melted the wax that held his wings together.

Rudy has managed to convince himself that no one can touch him - he's got lots of friends in high places.

When those friends aren't there anymore (and never were friends), he has no place to turn. In fact everyone hates the ghoul now.

All that drinking has to be taking a toll on his liver. Cirrhosis is irreversible, and it's guaranteed to kill him unless he stops drinking completely, which seems highly unlikely.

Add to that all the stress from this case and the Georgia indictment and his blood pressure is probably through the roof. And don't forget, this is a 79 year old man. I doubt he has much time left, which I presume means his estate will end up paying the bills.

It'll be an ignominious but well-deserved end for a once illustrious man who destroyed his life through his own really, really bad decisions.

And it’ll likely be a story with a sad ending. Everyone who’s still living will have deserted him, and trump will at least inwardly be saying “Rudy Who?” Outwardly, of course, he’ll issue some statement, but the donald is the kind of guy who’ll go for distancing to avoid “getting any ON him”.

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/30/judge-orders-default-judgment-sanctions-against-rudy-giuliani-in-election-workers-lawsuit.html

A federal judge on Wednesday issued a default judgment against former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and ordered him to pay sanctions of nearly $133,000 in a civil conspiracy lawsuit by two Georgia election workers he had claimed mishandled ballots in the 2020 presidential contest.

Judge Beryl Howell imposed the default judgment and monetary punishment because Giuliani repeatedly failed to comply with her orders to turn over electronically stored documents and other evidence sought by lawyers for the election workers, Ruby Freeman and Wandrea’ ArShaye Moss.

Howell blasted Giuliani for “willful ... misconduct,” and “slippery” statements in failing to turn over the requested information as part of the legal process known as discovery.

“The bottom line is that Giuliani has refused to comply with his discovery obligations and thwarted plaintiffs Ruby Freeman and Wandrea’ ArShaye Moss’s procedural rights to obtain any meaningful discovery in this case,” Howell wrote in a 57-page opinion that nodded at Giuliani’s recent criminal indictment in Georgia.

That's the only reason I can think of for neglecting to provide any of the discovery that was ordered. He's already conceded that he knowingly defamed Freeman and Moss, so there's nothing for him to fight anyway.

"... the question of how much monetary damages he should be ordered to pay them as a result of
the default judgment."

Well he lost his law license, he is facing major expenses for the upcoming trial in Georgia (he shouldn't
count in Trump paying him anything, and now Ms. Freeman and Moss are going to be into him for
millions. Oh well room and board are free in jail.

"The judge ordered Giuliani to pay more than $130,000 in lawyers' fees and other costs for shirking his duty
to turn over information."
