Trump asks to sever Georgia election case from co-defendants seeking speedy trial

Source: CNBC

Former President Donald Trump is seeking to sever his criminal election interference case in Georgia from any of his 18 co-defendants who are demanding that the case proceed quickly to trial, a Thursday court filing showed.

The request in Fulton County Superior Court came less than two hours after Trump pleaded not guilty to 13 criminal counts in the sprawling case accusing him of trying to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden in Georgia’s 2020 election.

Trump earlier Thursday also waived his right to appear at his arraignment scheduled for next week.

Defense attorney Steven Sadow argued in the new filing that Trump will not have enough time to prepare if his trial begins Oct. 23, the date that has been set for co-defendant Kenneth Chesebro.

he'd want his name cleared as soon as possible, but he knows he can't do that because the evidence of his guilt is overwhelming.

I pointed out how he didn't exactly hide the crimes he's charged with. We watched it all go down in real time. I imagine most of what a jury hears will be remedial.

His last criminal defense strategy is to install himself in the White House before a conviction. Or maybe even after.

the words that were coming out of his mouth.

Did Sadow suddenly realize what he had gotten himself into?

Sadow looks like he could be played on SNL by Will Ferrell.

I am looking for and awaiting that skit.

11. Even if he wasn't trying to delay, that request would make sense for him.

I think the one defendant's request for a speedy trial was meant to break away from being lumped in with Trump and a whole lot of slam-dunk guilty people. Otherwise it would have helped his lawyers to have more prep time.

Or whatever his name is, more credit than he deserves.

I think he was of the opinion that the black b***h didn't have enough on him and was too "shiftless" to go to trial so soon. Probably thought that would scare her into dropping the charges.

She called that bluff. Now it's his lawyers who will have to pull all-nighters and bring in costly extra staff to help prep for the trial so soon.

13. I hadn't considered he might think the charges might be dropped because she wouldn't be ready.

It sounds like he is planning a 'Trump's lawyers said it was okay' defense. It's hard to picture a trial with 19 defendants but it seems like the individual defenses would get lost in the massive evidence dump. Jurors might have trouble keeping it straight what each of the 19 said in their defense, and wind up voting to convict (or acquit) en mass.

And the only sure way to sever with the rest is to request a speedy trial. That's what I was thinking anyway.
