Alaska board of education votes to ban transgender girls from competing on high school girls teams

Source: AP

Updated 8:57 PM EDT, August 31, 2023

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The Alaska state board of education on Thursday voted to support banning transgender girls from competing on high school girls athletic teams, sending the issue to the attorney general.

Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy, who appointed the members of the state education board, has said the regulation is needed to ensure fairness in girls sports. The proposal now goes to another Dunleavy appointee, Alaska Attorney General Treg Taylor, a Republican, to determine whether it should go into effect. The agenda for the board meeting said the state government administration had no recommendation on whether the proposal should pass.

On Thursday, the board met in special session and approved on a 7-1 vote a regulation saying, “If a separate high school athletics team is established for female students, participation shall be limited to females who were assigned female at birth.” The only dissenting vote came from Felix Myers, the high school student representative on the board. The military advisor on the board abstained.

The board had initially taken up the matter in July, but it delayed its vote after hearing more than 2 1/2 hours of testimony and receiving about 1,400 pages of written comments. The board did not take any public comments at the latest meeting. However, member Lorri Van Diest said the earlier comments were about evenly split until a conservative family advocacy group in Anchorage submitted a petition and comments after the deadline, giving the ban’s proponents a wide edge.

The GOP's anti LGBT agenda is a killer to support from Gen Z and it is just cruel too.

Let's try some simple math.

Population of Alaska - 750,000
National percentage of transgender youth 13-17 yo - 1.4% (probably lower in Alaska)
National percentage male v female births - 51% male.
Percentage of Alaska kids home schooled - 27.5%

So this law punishes 3900 Alaska kids who just wanna fit in with society and have some fun.

What a bunch of perverted wankers.

It should be decided by the high school athletic association.

as not to confuse their sexual predators.

Alaska I think has one the highest concentrations of sexual offenders, of all the states.

The estimated population of Alaska is around 733,000 as of July 2022 and the 2020 census.

https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/AK#

As of a few months ago, there were more than 3300 registered sex offenders living in the state, with almost half of them in Anchorage.

https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2023/03/24/some-say-alaska-is-haven-sex-offenders-until-laws-change/

That makes 1 registered offender for every 222 people or so in the state.
However, the population of Anchorage was around 291,000 at last count (2020 census)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchorage,_Alaska

With more than 1400 offenders just in Anchorage, that gives a concentration of
around 1 registered offender for every 208 people there.

(using the 291,000 population figure and 1400 offender figure for the city.)

Meanwhile, take the most populous state of California.

As of earlier this year, California had nearly 62,000 registered offenders.
61,764 according to the following article.

https://screenandreveal.com/what-state-has-the-most-sex-offenders/

As of July 2022, the population of California was estimated at around 39 million
and the 2020 census had about 39.5 million.

https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/CA#

That means for California, there was 1 registered offender for every 629 people
(using the 39 million population figure and 62000 offender figure)

However, take the largest CA city of Los Angeles. Just the city itself, and not the greater metro area.

Currently, according the following article, the concentration in LA is 1 for every 877 people.

https://www.city-data.com/so/so-Los-Angeles-California.html

Also, by comparison, my city in Southern California is almost the same size population-wise (around 276,000 as of the 2020 census) as Anchorage. Yet, as of last count a few days ago, we had only 212 registered offenders in the area.

According to the same site as above, our ratio is 1 registered offender for every 1260 people,
much lower than the state average, and around 1/5 or 1/6 that of Anchorage.

Just pass a law making unified teams required at all levels. Schools, colleges, and pro level. That gets rid of all the controversy and finally makes things equal.

My position is a stronger position to abide by Title IX than what we currently have.

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

It’s laughable anyone thinks the right wing gives a shit about girls’ / womens’ sports. This ends in making it illegal to be trans.

They’re starting with a more palatable topic first. Then, they’ll keep moving the goal posts. The right wing is already starting to bring up bathrooms again.
