Steve Harwell, Former Smash Mouth Singer, Dies at 56
Source: Billboard
Former Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell has died, a representative for the band confirms to Billboard.
Harwell, who performed as lead vocalist for the California pop-rock act until announcing his retirement from the group in 2021, passed away Monday (Sept. 4) at his home in Boise, Idaho, after being in hospice care. He was 56.
Steve Harwell passed away this morning September 4, 2023 at his home in Boise Idaho. He was surrounded by family and friends and passed peacefully and comfortably, reads a statement provided by Smash Mouths manager.
The message continues, Steve Harwell was a true American original. A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle. Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom. And the fact that he achieved this near-impossible goal with very limited musical experience makes his accomplishments all the more remarkable.

(80 posts)Said they consumed at least a case of Jager Meister before the show.
And they werent the most pleasant group to be around.
I remember the thing at Sturgis a few years ago where he was pretty wasted, ranting the whole anti-VAX thing.
They did make some fun music, I guess.

Might not be the actual reason, but it's certainly in the running as a candidate.

(19,974 posts)Apparently he was both a mean and a sloppy drunk. Which was possibly a factor in Sturgis as well.
There's a video out there of his last performance before he left the band in 2021 and it's obvious he's got his hateful drunk on. He even cussed out the crowd and threatened to kill them.

(59,977 posts)I wasn't a fan, really, though I did like that song.
Alcoholism is terrible. I've lost a couple of friends to the disease, and it does mess up judgment and behavior as well as doing a lot of physical damage.
RIP.
