Earth just had its hottest summer on record, U.N. says, warning "climate breakdown has begun"

Source: CBS News

United Nations — "Earth just had its hottest three months on record," the United Nations weather agency said Wednesday. "The dog days of summer are not just barking, they are biting," warned U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a statement coinciding with the release of the latest data from the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) by the World Meteorological Organization.

"Our planet has just endured a season of simmering — the hottest summer on record. Climate breakdown has begun," Guterres said. The WMO's Secretary-General, Petteri Taalas, issued an urgent assessment of the data, saying: "The northern hemisphere just had a summer of extremes — with repeated heatwaves fueling devastating wildfires, harming health, disrupting daily lives and wreaking a lasting toll on the environment."

Taalas said that in the southern hemisphere, meanwhile, the seasonal shrinkage of Antarctic Sea ice "was literally off the charts, and the global sea surface temperature was once again at a new record."

The WMO report, which includes the Copernicus data as well information from five other monitoring organizations around the world, showed it was the hottest August on record "by a large margin," according to the U.N. agency, both on land and in the global monthly average for sea surface temperatures.

As a rather independent thinking Christian - in my mind, this is what the Bible warns about. That man will destroy himself and the world will end by fire.

I’m not trying to convert anyone. Not trying to argue religion. I’m just stating how I myself see things.

On one thing that I think we can all agree - mankind is stupid for not taking the care of Mother Earth seriously.

Peace.

I watched this documentary over the weekend. Informative and entertaining. Covers known previous climate changes and mass extinction up to the dinosaurs. Humans could reel in their bad habits, but I doubt we will. How could my lifestyle possibly have an effect on the planet!? Said 8 billion people.

They shouldn’t have left all those fossil fuels, to be dug up and used.
The devil lured us into using them!

the fossil fuels we use are mainly from the carboniferous period, and are mainly the remains of plants rather than dinosaurs. I thought we were burning the remains of extinct animals. What I learned in grade school :/

Dinosaur or devil, we have the knowledge that we need to stop, but we won't. The pre-dinosaurs life forms didn't do a thing to destroy their planet, dinosaurs didn't know about an asteroid heading their way, and with the short arms, even T Rex couldn't have lobbed it out of our path.

As I watched the documentary, I pictured God playing with Earth like a Magic Window, at least back then:

what we have experienced this year. One families trials could be considered bad luck. But this is effecting millions in one way or another. For us it was wildfires here near Spokane Wa. We were surrounded on 3 sides by them. In addition for the past 5 or 6 years the smoke from fires elsewhere has caused the Air quality index (AQI) many times to be truly horrible. This year we had one reading of 516. The scale only goes to 500. So it was literally off the charts.

If this was one bad year I would treat it as such but It clearly isn't. Migrations will pick up speed but have already started. We looked at 4 properties this year as 'Vacation/migration' home locations. For a long time there has been snow birds who fly south for the winter. What will we call migratory birds who fly ? for summers wildfire/smoke season.

IMO

MTG said Ice Age and taxes blah blah blah. And Gubment locked people in Burning Man and brainwashed them about climate and mud.
Start listening to the experts on science like MTG and stop scaring people about another warm summer day.

This was the Coolest Summer, El Nino is just starting, this wasn't an El Nino summer, this was just a neither La Nina nor El Nino and we set records. And once the ice runs out the temp will escalate faster as it takes much more energy (100 times as much) to melt ice than push water the next degree.
