First Democrat calls on Menendez to resign
Source: The Hill
Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) is calling on Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) to resign in the face of corruption charges, becoming the first Democrat lawmaker to do so.
Phillips, a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, said that while everyone is innocent until proven guilty, a member of Congress that has appeared to have broken the law should resign.
Yes, I am a Democrat and so is Sen. Menendez, but based on what I have seen, I am disappointed and yes, I think he should resign, Phillips said in an interview with CNN.
Phillips said that Democratic leaders in Congress should lean on him and push him out.

(29,075 posts)And I have always liked him personally. But I really wish he'd stop thinking he's proving anything by being the first Democrat to come forward saying another Democrat should resign or not run. I can hear the eyes rolling at our next state Senate District meeting already.
Maybe Menendez should resign, but at this stage I think it should be handled quietly by members of Senate leadership & not publicly by a 3rd term House member.

(23,010 posts)Menéndez was conspicuous for his outspoken support for Singer during his scam against Argentina a decade ago (the vulture fund heist).
Among Democrats, it was baffling as to why - given Singer's role as a GOP mega-bundler, and the gratuitous damage the heist was causing to U.S. standing abroad.
I think we now know what might've "persuaded" ol' Bob.

Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) is calling on U.S. Senator Bob Menendez to resign following his indictment on federal corruption charges.
These allegations are serious and alarming. It doesnt matter what your job title is or your politics no one in America is above the law. The people of New Jersey absolutely need to know the truth of what happened, and I hope the judicial system works thoroughly and quickly to bring this truth to light, said Kim. In the meantime, I dont have confidence that the Senator has the ability to properly focus on our state and its people while addressing such a significant legal matter. He should step down.
Kim, a three-term congressman from New Jerseys 3rd district, becomes the first major Democratic official in New Jersey to comment on todays announcement by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New Jersey, that they had unsealed an indictment against Menendez, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Menendez and his wife, Nadine, were charged with accepting bribes from three New Jersey businessmen, including cash, gold bars, a luxury Mercedes convertible, payments toward a mortgage, and home furnishings.
